- ODM·OEM

Interview: Editorial Writer Kim Jae-hong / Editorial Writer Moon Jung-won

While Korean cosmetics manufacturing technology is recognized around the world, mid-sized OEMs (manufacturing companies with custom labels) and ODM (manufacturing manufacturers' development production) that form the basis of Korea's cosmetics manufacturing industry are drawing attention. It is because it is introducing the best cosmetics at reasonable prices, which are highly competitive, regardless of which market it is available in all markets around the world. In particular, the cosmetics OEM and ODM company (CEO Park Kwang-jae), which marks its eighth anniversary this year, is establishing its position as a cosmetics manufacturer that is more recognized overseas beyond the domestic market by providing rapid product production and brand consulting that are tailored to the conditions that customers want, as well as mass production. In particular, it established a branch office in Malaysia last year, and is also stepping up efforts to enter the halal cultural market in Indonesia and Middle Eastern countries.

[Business Report] met with Park Kwang-jae, 52, CEO of Indus Park ester in the southeastern city of Incheon on Wednesday to hear about the future plans and descriptions of ester, a cosmetics OEM and ODM company that has put "the fastest response with the highest priority on customer satisfaction."

- Competition for cosmetics companies at home and abroad is getting fiercer. What is ester's competitiveness?

Esther is a cosmetics company. Cosmetics used to consist of manufacturing and distribution, but manufacturing and distribution began to be professionally divided in early 2000. As distribution stores such as Missha and The Face Shop have sprung up, there are many manufacturing companies at the same time. It's been 26 years since I worked in the cosmetics industry, although it's not a long time. Come to think of it, you can make a mold for almost all cosmetics, and not just me, but our company's research. The production team has know-how in the production of all cosmetics."

- I'm a researcher and I'm a researcher. What is the background of starting a business?

I majored in chemistry in college. As soon as he graduated from college, he entered the cosmetics industry. I became interested in the cosmetics industry because it seemed to suit my aptitude, and as I was working, I thought that I should build a factory later. Because it was a large scale in my first company, I only worked on research and production. After that, I worked for the second company for about nine years, and I learned a lot from it. I learned a lot about not only product development, but also business and company operation, and based on this, I became independent. The CEO of the second company helped a lot in the start-up. As a researcher, it seems to be relatively advantageous to make products. But when it comes to sales, it doesn't seem to be an advantage. In fact, when it comes to product sales, it takes a little bit of an exaggeration to market and promote products, but as a researcher, I am too.I can't exaggerate because I see it. I am more confident than anyone in making cosmetics."

- Fund is more important than anything else to start a business.

"When I started my business, I didn't do it because I had a lot of money as a worker. Five people visited to attract investment by making a proposal on the funds they had collected, but all five of them readily agreed.

- You must have had a lot of difficulties in starting a business.

When I was working for a second company, I also did business with my research. In doing business, I encountered moments when I had to make decisions as a representative rather than as an employee. The situation had to be judged by the representative in terms of the progress of the work, but the situation could not be reconciled because he was an employee. However, I became confident when I realized that what I had judged was right at the time. It has been 18 years since it entered the cosmetics industry. I had a little confidence, but I was actually afraid. When I was in my second company, I was thinking about getting independent, and a senior told me that I had to do my best to see you when I was in a company that was independent. He said that he should do his best when he is at the company so that he can get help from outside when he becomes independent later. In the end, that's when I got the idea that I can work hard in a given situation."

- The market situation has changed a lot in the early days of the start-up. What's the most different?

It was in the early 2000s that manufacturers and distributors were separated in the cosmetics industry. That's when a lot of manufacturing and distribution companies came into Since our company was established in 2011, it started later than other company. Still, it believes that it has gained some ground as its company has grown. Of course, during that time, I had difficulties and many ups and downs, but above all, I had my own inner workings."

The changes in the cosmetics market are always similar, but the key is that cosmetics are sensitive to trends. Perhaps that's why it is difficult to catch up with a fad by missing a little bit. The current market has become faster. It used to take five years to make a product or brand, but now it changes in a year."

- There are about 100 companies that have been certified as a luxury goods manufacturing facility (CGMP) and less than 6% of them are Esther was certified as CGMP in 2015. I'm curious about the position in the industry.

"As a cosmetics maker, I was thinking about what to do to get recognition from the outside and the surest way to do this was CGMP certification. In fact, CGMP certification is more about quality than technical skills. It is not easy to be certified as a small business because CGMP is expensive. Moreover, the CGMP certification requires that all members of the organization have the awareness and behavior of producing superior cosmetics, not just any facilities."

"There are many different kinds of make-up, and you can really go deep in each of those kinds. However, ester's directional setting is that it does not lag behind in competition with others rather than go deep in one area, but it should know a wide range of fields. I think it's a company that's cautious, but is currently ranked within the top 50 among cosmetics makers."

- Competition is fierce as number of South Korean cosmetics manufacturers ODM and OEMs are increasing rapidly. What is ester's discrimination and specialization service?

"The strength of esters is speed (speed). I think the most important thing is speed because the cosmetics industry is very sensitive to fashion. When our primary customer distributors ask us for a product that reflects consumers' recent needs, they respond quickly. I think ester's greatest strength is that customers can respond to what they want most quickly and accurately."

- It established its Malaysian subsidiary last year. What future plans do you plan to pursue through your Malaysian subsidiary?

The establishment of Malaysia`s own company is aimed at Indonesia and the Middle East. Currently, there are many routes to export products equivalent to halal certification through Malaysia. We are going to export halal certified products through Malaysia. The Vietnamese market is expanding through several previously traded companies. In fact, an official from a local hospital has decided to visit the company for its cosmetics production on the 19th of next week."

- If there is an assessment of the Chinese market and Esther's plan.

Korea, China and Japan account for a significant portion of Asia`s economy. I think the situation is due to the characteristics of people in the three countries who have a big idea to take the initiative in working. Especially, Chinese people have such a strong tendency, and China does not seem to be pleased with our direct advance into China. The Chinese want to do it themselves. Last year and last year, I felt disheartened at the fact that the THAAD issue and political issues played a major role as variables in the market situation. South Korea's cosmetics industry is turning to Southeast Asia or the U.S. As for China, Esther is not strangling itself to the Chinese market, only to meet what the market wants."

- What is the most difficult thing about pursuing a business as an ODM and OEM company?

In fact, there are so many different demands from retailers. However, it is not that the variety is difficult, but rather that the profit rate the manufacturer takes is too low. The retailer is under the burden of carrying its stock, but if it is done well, there is a huge profit. On the other hand, manufacturers have to maintain their limits, and the recent radical increase in the minimum wage is frankly burdensome."

"The other is the social perception that 'business people are not very good people.' In the past, I think there must have been many companies that were engaged in labor acquisition and overdue wages. But few such companies these days. However, because there are so many people who recognize it, I think, 'Why am I doing this with so many people?' It is also true that when people meet with companies, they are perceived to be such a bad-ass owner and have many worries about whether they should continue to do so. I think this is a reason why national competitiveness is less competitive in the long run."

When companies and individuals have problems, they often become bad guys. However, it is true that individuals often try to profit from these situations. There are too many examples. I think the social atmosphere is aimed at corporations."

- China is rapidly following Korea's cosmetics technology. What do you think of the future of Korea's cosmetics industry?

It is the design that makes it difficult for China to follow Korea. The Chinese people as a whole have a tendency to like red and an advisory picture. These two ideals in the basic perception of the Chinese people are not easy to develop design. Companies that have strengths in design in that regard will continue to grow. However, the technical aspects will follow all of Korea in a short period of time."

Cosmetics can be largely divided into basic products, makeup and hair products. With the proportion of basic products exceeding 50 percent, the combination with various beauty devices has not ended in cosmetics recently, but has continued to be attempted. After that, more functional products are expected to become a trend. I believe this phenomenon will continue not only in Korea but also in China."

"There are parts where automation is difficult for cosmetics. In other words, it does not produce the same product in bulk, but it produces a variety of products. In the end, people need to be touched. In the same vein, we expect the cosmetics industry to be recognized and able to grow as an industry where job creation is big."

- If there are major plans for this year.

"In the meantime, the main thing was that many customers came to us and asked us to make these products. In a way, it was a passive attitude. But from this year, the company plans to change into an active stance by proposing that it be used as we have developed something like this. In addition, the company plans to create additional basic care brands by taking advantage of its previous brand. We'll basically strengthen our position as a manufacturing company, but we'll continue to challenge ourselves to make a leap into a manufacturing distribution company that also serves as a distribution company."
