[영국 런던-Business Wire/뉴스와이어] = GSMA가 제1회 모바일 월드 스칼라 챌린지(Mobile World Scholar Challenge)의 수상자를 19일 발표했다.

모바일 월드 콩그레스 2018(Mobile World Congress 2018)에 신설된 모바일 월드 스칼라 챌린지는 전세계 대학들이 개발 중인 획기적인 신기술을 찾아내고 관심을 집중시키기 위해 설계된 동영상 기반 경진 대회다.

GSMA의 최고경영자 존 호프만(John Hoffman)은 “경제, 산업, 회사, 자선단체, 개인을 막론하고 새로운 아이디어를 수용하는 것은 혁신과 성장에 필수적이다”며 “모바일 월드 콩그레스에서 우리는 모바일 세상에 영향을 미칠 최첨단 아이디어들을 선보일 예정이며 제1회 모바일 월드 스칼라 챌린지의 수상자들은 이러한 우리의 의도를 잘 보여준다”고 말했다.

이어 “수상자들뿐 아니라 혁신적인 아이디어를 제출한 모든 참가자들에게 축하의 말을 건네고 싶다”고 덧붙였다.

챌린지 참가자들은 각자의 기술 연구 이면의 과학 원리와 잠재적 사용 사례를 홍보하는 짧은 동영상을 제출했다. 심사위원단이 5개 대륙의 대학들이 제출한 수십 개의 동영상을 검토한 후 GSMA가 5개의 금상과 3개의 은상을 수여했다.

수상자들은 모두 상금을 받고 그들이 제출한 동영상은 모바일 월드 콩그레스에서 상영될 예정이다. 금상 수상자들은 GSMA의 손님 자격으로 모바일 월드 콩그레스 2018에 참석하게 된다. 2018년 모바일 월드 스칼라들의 명단은 다음과 같다.

· 퀸스 대학교 벨파스트(Queen’s University Belfast), ECIT, 무선 혁신 센터(Centre for Wireless Innovation) - 5G 네트워크를 위한 플랫 자동 조종 고성능 안테나. 제출자: 닐 뷰캐넌(Neil Buchanan) 박사.

· 미시간 대학교(University of Michigan) - 진동 절연을 위한 생체모방 복합재료. 제출자: 니콜라스 코토프(Nicholas Kotov) 교수.

· 글래스고 대학교(University of Glasgow) - 꼬임 광선으로 연결된 스마트 시티. 제출자: 마틴 래버리(Martin Lavery) 박사.

은상 수상자

· 퀸스 대학교 벨파스트(Queen’s University Belfast), ECIT, 무선 혁신 센터(Centre for Wireless Innovation) - 체내 통신을 위한 조직 독립형 이식 안테나. 제출자: 매튜 맥길(Matthew Magill).

GSMA Announces Winners of Inaugural Mobile World Scholar Challenge

New Competition Puts Spotlight on New and Impactful Ideas from Academic and Research Communities Around the World

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The GSMA today announced the winners of its inaugural Mobile World Scholar Challenge. New for Mobile World Congress 2018, the Mobile World Scholar Challenge is a video-based competition designed to discover and highlight ground-breaking new technologies developed at universities around the globe.

“Embracing new ideas is the key to innovation and growth, be it an economy, an industry, a company, charity or individual,” said John Hoffman, CEO, GSMA Ltd. “At Mobile World Congress, we are constantly looking to showcase cutting-edge ideas poised to impact the mobile world, and the winners of this first Mobile World Scholar Challenge certainly represent this. Our congratulations to all of the winners, as well as everyone who submitted their innovations for consideration.”

Challenge participants submitted short-form videos that promote the science behind and potential use cases for their technology research. After a judging panel reviewed dozens of submissions from universities on five continents, the GSMA awarded five Gold Prizes and three Silver Prizes. All winners receive a cash award and their videos will be presented at Mobile World Congress, and Gold Prize winners will attend Mobile World Congress 2018 as guests of the GSMA. The 2018 Mobile World Scholars are:

Gold Prize Winners

• McGill University / Northwestern University – Graphene Audio: Advanced Nano-Materials for High Performance Loudspeakers. Submitted by Mr. Ari Pinkas.

• Northwestern University – Microfluidic Systems for the Skin. Submitted by Dr. Roozbeh Ghaffari.

• Queen’s University Belfast, ECIT, Centre for Wireless Innovation – Flat Self-Steered High Gain Antennas for 5G Networks. Submitted by Dr. Neil Buchanan.

• University of Michigan – Biomimetic Composites for Vibration Isolation. Submitted by Professor Nicholas Kotov.

• University of Glasgow – Smart Cities Connected by Twisted Light. Submitted by Dr. Martin Lavery.
