[M&A] KT Reviews 'M&A' Expanding Media Business..."Self-promotion, nothing has been decided."

KT Corp. said Tuesday that it is considering mergers and acquisitions of cable TV companies to expand its media business. The move is part of a management strategy to expand profitability.

That's the same reason why wired and wireless carriers are recently finding a way in new business areas, including media, amid a drop in sales of their core business network businesses and expected future declines. In the case of the media business, it is steadily growing, and it is also contributing to the rise in sales of mobile telecommunication

In a conference call on the 2nd, KT said that it posted 5.948 trillion won in sales and 369.5 billion won in operating profit in the third quarter of this year on a consolidated basis.
Compared to the same period of last year, sales increased 2.1%. Operating profit, however, declined 2.1 percent due to increased wireless rate discounts and increased costs of purchasing content services. Net profit, however, rose 18.2 percent to 239.5 billion won in the same period due to decreased loss of tangible and intangible assets.

What caught the eye during KT's announcement of its third-quarter earnings is that its revenue from its wireless (mobile communication) business has decreased significantly. However, its performance in media contents business, which is centered on IPTV, has increased, which is why it has been so successful.

In the third quarter of this year, sales of KT's media and content businesses increased 9.2 percent from the same period last year to 625.3 billion won. In particular, IPTV services have continued to grow at double-digit rates due to increased proportion of blue-chip subscribers and increased profits from platforms. Sales of IPTV on a separate basis reached 359.2 billion won, up 15.3 percent from the same period last year. The number of IPTV subscribers exceeded 7.77 million, up 5.1 percent from the same period last year.

KT recently reviewed documents on Delive and others, but it was not easy to formalize paid broadcasting M&A before rivals SK Broadband and LG Uplus.

In order to expand its media business, it is continuously considering cable TV M&A such as Delive. Some say that the company has now completed a solo due diligence to acquire Delive. It is heard that the sale price of Delive will amount to 920 billion won if it is set at 450,000 won per subscriber based on the value of M&A, a paid broadcasting company.

In a related move, KT said it is "reviewing" the rumor that its affiliate KT Skylife will take over MSO. However, he cautioned against further interpretation, saying that nothing has been confirmed.
As of June 27, KT's regulation on the total sum of paid broadcasting services (a regulation that prohibits total market share of cable TV-IPTV and satellite broadcasting) from exceeding 33.33%) has disappeared, allowing mergers and acquisitions through its subsidiary KTSARAF.

As for Cable TV, KT Skylife, its subsidiary, is considering it as one of its opportunities to break through the stagnant growth, but nothing has been decided, KT said.
In the meantime, KT also announced in a conference call that it will lead to increased sales in new areas such as real estate and finance, in addition to its media business.

"What is the strategy for achieving the mid-700 billion won target for real estate sales in 2020?" said KT, "The project is to optimize rental businesses according to characteristics of assets and find optimal development products in line with location characteristics and real estate market trends." He added, "We are currently working on development at 20 locations, but we are not changing our goal of achieving mid-700 billion won in real estate sales by 2020.

In particular, it cited "realistic media" when asked about "What is KT's unique differentiated service" at 5G, which is scheduled to be commercialized in March 2019. "We are planning to expand related services such as releasing independent giga-live TVs this month to boost the real media market and strengthen our competitive edge." said a representative for KT. "We are preparing variety of services that can come out at the time of commercialization by expanding business areas to non-communication platform areas such as self-driving cars." Regarding this year's dividends, the company said it will maintain the minimum level of the previous year, although it should consider the cost of investments in 5G.
