SK이노베이션이 글로벌 자동차 업체들의 최대 격전지인 미국에 전기차 배터리 생산거점 건설을 본격 추진한다.
SK이노베이션(대표이사: 김준)은 지난 26일 이사회를 통해 미국 조지아주 잭슨 카운티 커머스시(Commerce, Jackson County, GA-US)에 9.8GWh/년 규모의 전기차 배터리 공장 건설을 위한 1조 1396억원 투자를 결의했다.
이 공장은 커머스 시 일대 약 340,000평의 부지에 건설될 예정으로, SK이노베이션은 2019년 초에 착공해 2022년부터 양산 공급한다는 계획이다.
SK이노베이션은 투자 진행을 위해 현지 법인 SK Battery America(가칭)를 설립하고 향후 건설 투자비, 운전자본금 등을 연도별 분할 출자 형태로 투자할 계획이다.
SK이노베이션은 이번 투자를 포함해 수주가 늘어날 것으로 판단되는 만큼 생산량 증가를 감안해 투자를 확대할 예정이며, 조지아주는 고용 및 교육훈련 프로그램 지원 등을 포함한 각종 행정적 지원을 하기로 했다. 이번 공장건설 투자결정으로 SK이노베이션은 미국 내 생산 거점 확보해 한국, 중국, 유럽, 미국에 이르는 글로벌 4각 생산 체계를 완성하게 됐다.
미국 남동부에 위치한 조지아 주(주도 : 애틀란타)는 최근 6년 연속 ‘기업하기 좋은 주’로 선정되며 제조업의 메카로 급부상하고 있는 주 중 하나다. 록히드마틴 등 미국 내 굴지의 기업을 비롯해 인도 타타그룹, 한국의 기아차/한화큐셀 등이 진출해 있을 만큼 사업환경 경쟁력이 우수한 곳으로 잘 알려져 있다. 특히 폭스바겐, BMW, 다임러, 볼보, 현대∙기아차 등 글로벌 자동차 회사들이 위치한 미국 남동부의 생산 거점과의 연계성을 감안한 성장성 측면에서도 최적지로 평가 받고 있다.
SK이노베이션은 이번 미국 배터리 공장 건설 투자결정을 비롯해 향후 수주 증대에 따른 증설까지 포함해 2022년 연간 생산량 55GWh 규모의 생산설비 구축을 목표로 하고 있다. 이는 현재 4.7 GWh의 생산량의 10배가 넘는 규모로 SK이노베이션의 배터리 사업 성장세가 괄목할만하다.

[INVEST] SK Innovation to Build a Battery Factory in GeorgiaInvestment of 1.1396 trillion won
SK Innovation is planning to build a production base for electric vehicle batteries in the U.S., which is the biggest battleground for global carmakers.
SK Innovation (CEO: Kim Jun) decided to invest $1.13 billion (1.139.6 trillion KRW) to build a 9.8GWh/year electric vehicle battery plant in Jackson County, Georgia, through a board meeting on the 26th.
The plant will be built on about 340,000 pyeong of land in the city of Commerce, with SK Innovation planning to start construction in early 2019 and supply mass production starting in 2022.
To proceed with the investment, SK Innovation plans to establish a local corporation, SK Battery America, and invest future construction investment expenses and operating capital in the form of a yearly installment investment.
SK Innovation will expand its investment in consideration of increased production as orders are expected to increase, including the investment, while the state of Georgia will provide various administrative support, including support for employment and education and training programs. With the decision to invest in plant construction, SK Innovation has secured a production base in the U.S., completing a global four-way production system that spans South Korea, China, Europe and the U.S.
Georgia, a southeastern U.S. state, has been named a "business-friendly state" for the past six years and is rapidly emerging as a manufacturing mecca. It is well known for its competitive edge in the business environment, as it has leading U.S. companies such as Lockheed Martin, India's Tata Group, and Korea's Kia Motors/Hanwha Q Cells. In particular, it is considered an optimal location in terms of growth considering its link to its production base in the southeastern U.S., where global carmakers such as Volkswagen, BMW, Daimler, Volvo and Hyundai & Kia are located.
SK Innovation aims to build production facilities with an annual production capacity of 55GWh in 2022 including an investment decision to build a battery plant in the U.S., as well as an expansion due to increased orders in the future. This is more than 10 times the output of 4.7 GWh at present, and SK Innovation's battery business growth is remarkable.
"SK Innovation has been actively pushing to secure production bases and increase orders in major global markets in order to secure competitive edge in its battery business based on Deep Change 2.0." said President Kim Jun of SK Innovation.
