미국사업 안정적 운영 위한 발판 마련, 현지 경영진 그대로 유지 방침
이마트가 미국 현지 유통기업을 인수한다.
이마트는 미국 서부지역을 거점으로 운영중인 ‘굿푸드 홀딩스(Good Food Holdings)’를 인수키로 했다고 7일 밝혔다. 인수금액은 2억7,500만 달러다.
‘굿푸드 홀딩스’는 '브리스톨 팜스(Bristol Farms)', '레이지 에이커스(Lazy Acres)', '메트로폴리탄 마켓(Metropolitan Market)' 등 3개 유통 브랜드를 보유한 지주회사다.
이마트는 이 기업이 LA, 씨애틀 등 美 서부 지역에 총 24개 매장을 운영하고 있으며 고급스러운 내부 인테리어 뿐 아니라 신선/헬스/식음서비스 등에 차별화된 콘텐츠를 갖췄다고 설명했다.
먼저 ‘브리스톨 팜스’는 프리미엄 그로서리 스토어로서 LA와 샌디에고에 12개 매장을 운영하고 있다.
‘메트로폴리탄 마켓’ 역시 프리미엄 그로서리 스토어로 씨애틀에 7개 매장을 영업중이며 ‘레이지 에이커스’는 건강식품과 뷰티 상품군에 강점을 둔 내츄럴 그로서리 스토어로서 LA와 샌디에고에 5개 매장을 보유중이다.
굿푸드 홀딩스의 연매출은 6,700억원, 임직원 수는 3,100명 정도다. 이마트는 인수 후에도 현지 경영진을 그대로 유지해 운영할 방침이다.
이마트측은 이마트의 해외 현지기업 인수가 이번이 처음이라며, 미국사업을 체계적으로 준비하고 안정적으로 운영할 수 있는 계기가 될 것이라고 밝혔다.
전세계 유통의 메이저리그격인 미국 대도시 상권에서 20~40년 이상 실제로 매장을 운영해 온 실력 있는 유통기업 인수를 통해 미국사업 연착륙을 이루겠다는 취지다.
한편 이에 앞서 이마트는 지난 8월 LA 다운타운 지역에 프리미엄 그로서란트 매장인 'PK마켓(가칭)'을 열기 위한 임대차 계약을 체결한 바 있다. 현재 내년 하반기 개점을 목표로 오픈 작업을 진행 중이다.
이마트 이갑수 사장은 "미국 시장에 새롭게 도전하는 만큼 차근차근 준비해 장기적 관점에서 가시적인 성과를 도모할 계획"이라고 밝혔다.

E-Mart said Monday it has decided to take over Good Food Holdings, which operates in the western U.S. The acquisition amount is $275 million.
Good Food Holdings is a holding company that owns three distribution brands: "Bristol Farms," "Lasy Acres" and "Metropolitan Market."
E-Mart explained that the company operates a total of 24 stores in the western U.S. such as Los Angeles and Seattle, and has differentiated contents in fresh, health and food services as well as luxurious interior.
First, Bristol Farm is a premium Grigorie store that operates 12 stores in Los Angeles and San Diego.
The Metropolis Market is also a premium Grigorie Store with seven stores, while Lazy Acus has five stores in Los Angeles and San Diego as a Natural Grocery store that focuses on health products and beauty products.
The annual sales of Good Food Holdings are 670 billion won and the number of executives and employees is around 3,100. After the acquisition, E-Mart plans to maintain and operate its local management.
E-Mart said, "This is the first time for E-Mart to acquire a local company overseas," adding, "This will be an opportunity to systematically prepare and manage its U.S. business in a stable manner."
The plan is aimed at making a soft landing of U.S. business by acquiring a competent retail company that has actually operated stores in the U.S. metropolitan area, the major league scale of distribution worldwide, for more than 20 to 40 years.
Meanwhile, E-Mart earlier signed a lease deal in August to open a premium Grigorant store in the downtown Los Angeles area. It is currently in the process of opening its doors with an aim to open them in the second half of next year.
"As we are going to challenge the U.S. market anew, we are going to prepare step by step to promote tangible results from a long-term perspective," said Lee Kap-soo, president of E-Mart.
