삼성전자가 미래 신성장동력 확보를 위해 글로벌 기업에 대한 투자와 인수합병(M&A) 관련 공격적인 행보를 보이고 있다. 메모리반도체 다음 먹거리를 찾기 위해 이 같은 움직임은 더욱 활발하게 나타날 것으로 보인다.

17일 증권가와 M&A업계 등에 따르면 삼성전자는 최근 아마존 등과 함께 이스라엘 반도체 업체인 '윌롯(Wiliot)'에 투자한 것으로 알려졌다. 삼성벤처투자가 아마존 웹 서비스, 에이버리 데니슨(AVERY DENNISON) 등과 함께 윌롯의 3000만 달러 규모 파이낸싱에 참가했다는 것이다. 윌롯은 건전지와 같은 유선 전력원의 도움 없이 무선, 블루투스 등 네트워크의 전자파 에너지를 활용하는 반도체 생산 스타트업이다. 사물인터넷(IoT) 서비스가 확대되고 있는 만큼 생산 제품의 활용 범위가 넓어 성장가능성도 큰 것으로 알려졌다.

삼성전자는 올해 외국 스타트업 관련 투자 확대에 공격적인 행보를 보이고 있다. 윌롯 투자에 앞서 모바일용 멀티카메라 기술을 보유하고 있는 현지 스타트업 '코어포토닉스'(Corephotonics)를 1억5000만~1억6000만 달러(1650억~1800억원)에 인수하기 위한 협상을 진행 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

코어포토닉스는 2017년 삼성벤처스로와 폭스콘 등으로부터 1500만 달러를 투자받는 등 카메라 관련 기술력이 뛰어난 곳이다. 카메라를 직접 생산하지 않고, 디자인만 하지만 모바일 기기용 멀티카메라에 대한 각종 기술을 보유하고 있다. 지난 2017년 11월 코어포토닉스는 애플을 상대로 아이폰7플러스와 아이폰8플러스에 대해 특허침해소송을 제기하며 업계의 주목을 받은 곳이기도 하다.

삼성전자의 코어포토닉스 M&A 추진은 반도체와 스마트폰 등 효자 사업이 위기에 직면한 상태에서 미래성장사업을 지원하기 위한 전략 차원일 가능성이 높다. 지난해 4분기 어닝쇼크를 기록한 삼성전자는 부문별 실적을 공개하지 않았지만 스마트폰 사업의 성적이 좋지 못했다. 최근 스마트폰의 경쟁력으로 카메라 기능이 대세로 자리한 만큼 성능 강화는 사용자 만족감을 실감나게 높여 판매량 확대로 이어질 수 있다. 카메라 핵심 기술의 보유로 경쟁업체인 애플을 견제하려는 의도도 깔려 있다.

삼성전자가 외국 스타트업 등 글로벌 기업에 공격적인 투자에 나서고 있는 것은 반도체와 스마트폰 사업을 중심으로 미래 신성장동력 확보를 위한 움직임의 일환이다. 업계는 삼성전자의 이 같은 움직임은 당분간 계속 될 것으로 보고 있다.

이재용 삼성전자 부회장은 올 초부터 5G 네트워크 통신장비 생산라인 가동식에 참석해 "새롭게 열리는 5G 시장에서 도전자의 자세로 경쟁력을 키워야 한다"며, 4대 성장사업 육성에 대한 강한 의지를 내비친 바 있다.

자금 활용 폭도 크다. 삼성전자는 지난해 8월 2021년까지 180조원을 투자하겠다는 계획을 내놓으며 AI, 5G, 바이오, 전장사업 등 4대 성장사업에 약 25조원을 투자한다고 밝혔기 때문이다. 25조의 투자 금액 중 미래 신성장 사업 육성을 위한 M&A 자금으로 20조원 가량을 책정한 것으로 알려졌다.

M&A업계 관계자는 "삼성전자의 사업이 반도체와 스마트폰에 집중돼 있어 신성장사업 마련에 대한 필요성이 높아지고 있다"며 "최근 중국 바이오 업체에도 눈독을 들이는 등 올해를 시작으로 M&A 관련 움직임이 본격화 될 것으로 보인다"고 말했다.

Samsung Electronics is making aggressive moves to invest in global companies and to acquire new growth engines. This kind of movement is expected to become more active in order to find the next business to be followed by memory semiconductor.

According to stock industries and M&A industries on the 17th, Samsung Electronics recently invested in Wiliot, an Israeli semiconductor company, with Amazon and others.

Samsung Venture Investment has joined Willot`s 30 million dollars in financing with Amazon Web services and AVERY DENNISON.

Wilot is a semiconductor production startup that utilizes electromagnetic energy of network such as wireless and Bluetooth without help from wired power sources such as batteries.

As IoT (Internet of Things) services are expanding, there is a high chance of growth as production products are being used extensively. Samsung Electronics is making aggressive moves to expand investments related to foreign startups this year.

Before making investments into Willoton, it was able to purchase Corephotonics (Corephotonics), which is a local startup company that has multi-camera technology for mobile devices, for between 150 million won (150 million KRW 150 million and 160 million and 160 million KRW).

Core Photonics is a place that has excellent camera technology by investing $ 15 million from Samsung Benchers in 2017 and Foxconn. Although it does not manufacture cameras directly and does design, it has various technologies for multi-camera for mobile devices.

Core Photonics also received attention in November 2017 when it filed patent infringement lawsuits against Apple against iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus.

It is highly likely that Samsung Electronics ' move to push for M&A with core photonics is a strategic opportunity to support future growth businesses at a time when semiconductor and Smartphone businesses are facing crisis.

Although Samsung Electronics, which recorded fourth quarter earnings shock last year, did not disclose its performance by sector, its Smartphone business did not perform well.

As camera function has become a trend recently due to competitive edge of Smartphones, strengthening performance can lead to increased sales volume as it actually increases user satisfaction. It also intends to check Apple, which is a competitor, by having major camera technologies.

Samsung Electronics ' aggressive investment in global companies such as foreign startups is part of its move to secure new growth engines for the future, focusing on semiconductor and Smartphone businesses.

The industry expects the move to continue for the time being.

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong attended 5G network communication equipment production line early this year and said, " We need to develop our competitive edge with the attitude of a challenger in 5G market.

There is a huge amount of money being used. Samsung Electronics announced its plan to invest 180 trillion won by 2021 in August last year and announced that it would invest about 25 trillion won in four major growth projects such as AI, 5G, bio and electric field projects.

Of the 25 trillion won invested, about 20 trillion won has been allocated to develop future growth engines.  Because Samsung Electronics ' businesses are focused on semiconductors and Smartphones, there is a growing need for new growth. " said a representative for M&A industries.
