김조원 사장 “우주센터 건립, 민간 주도 우주 산업화 이끄는 전기가 될 것”
한국항공우주산업㈜(KAI)과 사천시가 5일 경남 사천 용당리 인근에서 ‘KAI 우주센터 부지조성 착공식’을 가졌다.
이번 착공식에는 김조원 사장과 여상규 국회의원, 송도근 사천시장, 사천시의회 의장, 경남도의원, 협력업체 관계자 등 총 200명이 참석했다.
KAI는 ‘19년 8월 까지 경남 사천시 사천읍 용당리 인근에 총 면적29,113m²규모의 부지를 조성하고, ‘20년 6월까지 연면적 17,580m²규모의 민간 우주센터를 건립한다.
KAI 우주센터는 550명 규모의 R&D 사무동과 실용급 위성 6기를 동시 조립할 수 있는 조립장 및 최첨단 위성시험장 등을 갖추게 되며 중대형 실용급 위성의 개발과 양산을 담당하게 된다.
김조원 사장은 “이번 우주센터 건립은 민간 주도의 우주 산업화를 이끄는 도약의 전기가 될 것”이라며“향후 국내 중소 우주 전문업체들과 협력하여 국내는 물론 해외시장에도 진출할 수 있도록 최선의 노력을 다하겠다” 고 밝혔다.
KAI는 우주센터 건립을 통해 설계-제작-조립-시험을 One Site로 통합하여 우주기술 개발 인프라를 최적화 하는 한편, 본사 R&D인력 2100여명과의 협업으로 개발 시너지를 높일 계획이다.
KAI는 현재 우주사업을 전담하고 있는 대전 연구센터를 우주센터가 위치한 사천으로 이전 할 계획이며, 올해 1월부터 200여명의 인력이 순차적으로 이동하고 있다.
KAI는 항공사업 뿐만 아니라 우주사업 참여를 지속적으로 확대하며 국내 민간 우주기술 강화 및 산업 활성화에 크게 기여하고 있다.
KAI는 그동안 다목적실용위성(아리랑) 1호에서 7호까지 1톤급 위성과 3톤급 정지궤도 복합위성 개발에 참여해 왔다.
첫 민간 주도 개발사업인 차세대중형위성의 개발을 통해 500kg급 표준 위성 플랫폼을 확보하여 향후, 양산과 수출사업으로 확대해 나갈 예정이다.
KAI는 지난해 군 정찰위성 수주로 국방위성 분야에도 진출했으며, 향후, 다목적실용위성, 정지궤도복합위성, 항법위성 등 다양한 위성 개발 참여가 기대된다.
더불어, 한국형발사체(누리호)의 총조립 기술을 기반으로 발사체 체계종합기술을 강화하고 향후, 위성 발사 서비스 사업까지 사업영역을 확대해 우주 전문 업체로서의 입지를 구축한다는 목표다.
KAI는 향후 우주사업 인프라 및 투자를 지속적으로 확대해 현재 연 2000억 원 규모인 우주사업 매출을 2030년 연 1조원 규모로 성장시키며 국내 우주산업 발전을 선도할 계획이다.
[Focus] KAI to build a private space center...Integration of space technology development infrastructure
Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Sacheon City held a ground-breaking ceremony to build a site for the KAI space center near Yongdang-ri, Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, on Saturday.
A total of 200 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including President Kim Jo-won, Rep. Yeo Sang-kyu, Sacheon Mayor Song Do-geun, chairman of the Sacheon City Council, Gyeongnam Provincial Council and officials from suppliers.
KAI will build a site with a total area of 29,113 square meters near Yongdang-ri in Sacheon-eup, South Gyeongsang Province, by August 1919, and a private space center with a floor area of 17,580 square meters by June 2016.
KAI's space center will be equipped with a 550-member R&D office building, an assembly plant and a state-of-the-art satellite test site that can simultaneously assemble six practical satellites, and will be in charge of developing and mass-producing mid-to-large, practical satellites.
"The space center will serve as a turning point for the private sector-led space industrialization," said President Kim Won-won. "We will work with small and mid-sized space companies in Korea to make inroads into the domestic market as well as overseas markets in the future."
KAI plans to optimize its space technology development infrastructure by integrating design, manufacture, assembly and test into One Site through the construction of the space center, while increasing development synergy through collaboration with 2,100 R&D personnel at its headquarters.
KAI plans to relocate its research center in Daejeon, which is currently in charge of the space project, to Sacheon, where the space center is located, and some 200 personnel have been moving sequentially since January this year.
KAI continues to expand its participation in the space project as well as in the aviation business, contributing greatly to strengthening the nation's private space technology and revitalizing the industry
KAI has been participating in the development of a one-ton satellite and a three-ton geostationary combined satellite from Arirang 1 to 7.
It will secure a 500kg standard satellite platform through the development of the next generation satellite, the first private-led development project, and expand into mass production and export projects in the future.
KAI has also advanced into the defense satellite field by winning orders for military reconnaissance satellites last year, and is expected to participate in various satellite development such as multipurpose satellite, geostationary satellite and navigation satellite in the future.
In addition, based on the total assembly technology of the Korea Launch Vehicle (Nuri), the company aims to strengthen the comprehensive technology of the projectile system and build its position as a space-specialized company by expanding the business area to the satellite launch service business in the future.
KAI plans to continue to expand its infrastructure and investment in the space business in the future to grow its annual sales of the space business, currently worth 200 billion won, to 1 trillion won per year in 2030, leading the development of the domestic space industry.
