[Focus]  Korea to win 90% of global ship orders in February...recapture the top spot

South Korea has regained the world's No. 1 position by winning 90 percent of the world's orders.

According to Clarkson Research, a British shipbuilding and shipping market analysis agency, Korea won 630,000 CGT (15 ships) in February, far ahead of China, which accounted for only 3 percent.

In February, the Clarkson New Shipbuilding Index rose one point to 131 points, with LNG ship prices rising $1 million for the second straight month.

In February, global orders for ships stood at 700,000 CGT (15 vessels), out of which South Korean shipbuilders won 630,000 CGT (8 vessels), beating China, which won 20,000 CGT (one ship). Japan followed with orders of 10,000 CGT, or one ship.

In the January-February period, China received 41 percent of the total orders from 1.24 million CGT (65 ships), Korea's 1.21 million CGT (20 ships), Italy's 240,000 CGT (three ships), and Japan's 230,000 CGT (six ships).

In February, global orders fell 70 percent from 2.31 million CGT (86 ships) last month, and the number of orders placed by cumulative ships between January and February was 3.52 million CGT in 2017, 7.07 million CGT (101 percent) in 2018, and 3.01 million CGT (57 percent) in 2019.

At the end of February this year, the global order backlog fell by 1.01 million CGT from the end of January to 80.5 million CGT. Compared with last month, South Korea saw a 220,000 CGT increase, compared with a 210,000 CGT drop in China and 540,000 CGT in Japan. China has 29.13 million CGT (36 percent), followed by Korea with 21.75 million CGT (27 percent), and Japan with 14.52 million CGT (18 percent).

In February, the Clarkson New Shipbuilding Index hit 131 points, up 1 point from 130 points last month.

If you look at the trends in shipping prices, the VLCCs and container ships (13,000-14,000 TEUs) each represented $93 million and $115 million, the same as last month. LNG carriers rose $1 million to $185 million last month, and have been on a steady rise since February last year when they hit a record low of $180 million.
