삼성전자가 역대 최대 용량의 '12GB(기가바이트) LPDDR4X(Low Power Double Data Rate 4X) 모바일 D램'을 양산한다.
'12GB LPDDR4X 모바일 D램'은 2세대 10나노급(1y) 16기가비트(Gb) 칩을 6개 탑재한 제품이다. 기존 '8GB 모바일 D램' 보다 용량을 1.5배 높여 역대 최대 용량을 구현했다.
이로써 일반적인 울트라 슬림 노트북에 탑재된 8GB D램 모듈보다도 높은 용량의 D램 패키지를 모바일 기기에 적용하게 됐다.
폴더블(Foldable)과 같이 화면이 2배 이상 넓어진 초고해상도 스마트 폰에서 다양한 어플리케이션을 더 원활하게 사용할 수 있게 된 것이다.
모바일 업체들은 차세대 스마트폰에 5개 이상의 카메라 모듈, 대형/멀티 디스플레이, 인공지능 프로세서, 5G 통신서비스 등을 도입하고 있다.
이런 고사양 스마트폰에 더 높은 용량의 D램을 탑재하면 시스템 성능을 대폭 향상시킬 수 있다.
또한 12GB 대용량을 한 개의 패키지로 구현함으로써 소비전력 효율을 높이고 배터리 탑재 면적도 키울 수 있다.
'12GB LPDDR4X 모바일 D램'은 현재 모바일 기기에 사용되는 가장 빠른 속도인 초당 34.1기가바이트(GB)의 속도로 데이터를 읽고 쓸 수 있으며, 패키지 두께도 1.1mm에 불과해 모바일 기기를 더 슬림하게 설계할 수 있다.
삼성전자 메모리사업부 마케팅팀 전세원 부사장은 "12GB 모바일 D램을 본격 양산해 차세대 플래그십 스마트폰에 필요한 모든 메모리 라인업을 업계 유일하게 공급하게 됐다"며, "고객의 D램 수요 증가에 맞춰 평택에서 생산 비중을 지속 확대해 프리미엄 모바일 시장에서 위상을 강화시켜 나갈 것"이라고 밝혔다.
삼성전자는 이달 12GB 모바일 D램 양산을 시작으로 하반기에는 8GB 이상 고용량 모바일 D램 라인업의 공급 물량을 3배 이상 확대해 글로벌 IT 고객들의 프리미엄 메모리 수요 증가에 적극 대응할 계획이다.

Samsung Electronics is planning to mass-produce '12GB LPDDR4X (Low Power Double Data Rate 4X) mobile DRAM' that has the largest capacity ever.
'12GB LPDDR4X Mobile D-RAM' is a product that has six second-generation 10-nano class (1y) 16Gb chips. It has increased its capacity by 1.5 times compared to current 8GB mobile D-RAM, which is the biggest ever.
This will apply a DRAM package with a higher capacity than the 8GB DRAM module installed in a typical Ultra Slim laptop to mobile devices.
It allows users to use various applications more smoothly on ultra-high resolution smart phones that have more than twice as wide screens as foldable.
Mobile companies are introducing more than five camera modules, large/multi-display, artificial intelligence processors and 5G communications services for their next-generation smartphones.
If these high-end Smartphones are equipped with D-RAM with higher capacity, they can greatly improve performance of their systems.
It can also increase efficiency of electricity consumption and increase area of battery by implementing 12GB of large capacity in a single package.
The "12GB LPDDR4X mobile DRAM" can read and write data at a speed of 34.1 gigabytes per second, the fastest speed currently used in mobile devices, and only 1.1 millimeters in package thickness allows mobile devices to be designed slimmer.
"By mass-producing 12GB mobile DRAMs in earnest, we are the only one in the industry to supply all of the memory lineups needed for next-generation flagship smartphones." said Vice President Jeon Je-won of Samsung Electronics' Memory Business Department.
Starting with mass-production of 12GB mobile DRAMs this month, Samsung plans to more than triple the supply volume of its high-capacity mobile DRAM lineup of 8GB and larger in the second half to actively respond to rising demand for premium memory from global IT customers.
