France's world-renowned defense industry company Thales has acquired Zemalto, a security semiconductor chip maker.

According to M&A industries on the 8th, Thales announced on the 3rd that it will take over Gemalto for 4.8 billion euros (about 6.2 trillion won) and establish itself as a digital security company with 80,000 people.

Based on manpower and technical skills reinforced by M&A, Thales will also step up efforts to develop security solutions in areas such as digital ID, biometric authentication, data protection, and cybersecurity technologies, unmanned air traffic management, data, network, airport security and financial transactions.

In particular, it plans to provide human and material identification solutions to companies such as finance, mobile carriers, government agencies, and state-run companies to prepare countermeasures to secure confidential data.

To that end, Thales will invest 1 billion euros in research and development annually. The move is part of efforts to secure digital expertise in the Internet of Things, big data, artificial intelligence, and cyber security sectors.

Thales has been active in research and development in terms of fostering future industries. Based on this, it held 25,500 patents, and registered more than 400 new patents last year alone. Thales is said to be portraying the future of the world by constantly researching and developing state-of-the-art technologies.

It is also highly competitive in technology. The new Thales is busy developing technologies to support the entire key decision-making process of enterprises and organizations by providing software development, data processing, real-time decision support, connectivity and end-to-end network management solutions for the increasingly vulnerable IT environment as interconnection intensifies.

Thales Group will continue to innovate in major markets by investing 1 billion euros (about 1.2 trillion won) in research and development annually. In particular, it aims to draw global digital expertise in the fields of IoT, big data, artificial intelligence, and cyber security.

Based on the acquisition of Gemalto, Thales is now able to strengthen its competitiveness in Digital Identity and Security (DIS), one of the seven global business sectors. The DIS division will engage with private and military clients of Thales Group in 68 countries around the world, expanding through mergers and acquisitions to include:

"The acquisition of Gemalto, a global leader in digital identity and data protection, has secured cutting-edge technologies and capabilities in five major industries: aerospace, space, land transport, digital security and defense security," said Talese CEO and CEO Petris Kane. "The technology involved will become a global digital security leader by combining the capabilities of employees around the world with smart technologies that help people make the best choices in the world."
