故 조양호 회장 리더십 공백 최소화 및 안정적 그룹 경영 지속 목적… 그룹 창업정신인 수송보국 계승·발전도 기대
조원태 대한항공 사장이 한진그룹 회장에 취임한다.
한진그룹 지주회사인 한진칼은 24일 오후 이사회를 열고, 한진칼 사내이사인 조원태 대한항공 사장을 한진칼 대표이사 회장으로 선임했다. 이에 따라 조원태 신임 회장은 한진그룹의 대표로서 경영을 이끄는 막중한 역할을 맡게 됐다. 단, 별도 취임 행사는 갖지 않기로 했다.
한진칼 이사회는 “조원태 신임 대표이사 회장의 선임은 고(故) 조양호 회장의 리더십 공백을 최소화하는 한편, 안정적인 그룹 경영을 지속하기 위한 결정”이라며 “그룹 창업 정신인 ‘수송보국(輸送報國)’을 계승·발전시키고, 한진그룹 비전 달성이 차질없이 이뤄질 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
조원태 신임 회장은 이날 이사회에서 “선대 회장님들의 경영이념을 계승하여 한진그룹을 더욱 발전시켜 나갈 것”라며 “현장중심 경영, 소통 경영에 중점을 둘 계획”이라고 각오를 밝혔다.
조원태 신임 회장은 2003년 8월 한진그룹 IT 계열사인 한진정보통신의 영업기획담당으로 입사했으며, 2004년 10월 대한항공으로 자리를 옮겨 경영기획팀, 자재부, 여객사업본부, 경영전략본부, 화물사업본부 등 주요 분야를 두루 거쳤다.
조원태 신임 회장은 2017년 대한항공 사장에 취임한 이후 델타항공과의 태평양노선 조인트벤처 출범, 아시아·태평양항공사협회(AAPA, Association of Asia Pacific Airlines) 사장단회의의 성공적 개최 등을 이끄는 등 변화와 혁신을 주도해왔다. 또한 사내 소통의 보폭을 넓히며 조직문화 개선에 앞장서는 한편, 노동조합과의 적극적 대화 노력을 토대로 발전적 노사관계 정립에 기여한 바 있다.
한편 조원태 신임 회장은 이번 회장 취임에 따라 오는 6월 1일부터 3일까지 서울에서 열리는 국제항공운송협회(IATA) 연차총회 의장직도 맡게 될 예정이다.

Hanjin Carl, the holding company of Hanjin Group, held a board meeting on Monday afternoon and appointed Cho Won-tae, president of Korean Air, the company's in-house director, as chairman of Hanjin Carl's CEO. As a result, new chairman Cho Won-tae will play a crucial role in leading management as head of Hanjin Group. However, it has decided not to hold a separate inaugural event.
"The selection of new CEO Lee Won-tae is a decision to minimize the leadership vacuum of the late Chairman Cho Yang-ho, while continuing stable management of the group," the board of directors said. "We expect that the group's founding spirit, "Susongboguk," can be inherited and developed, and Hanjin Group's vision can be achieved without a hitch."
"We will further develop Hanjin Group by inheriting the management ideology of our predecessors," Cho Won-tae, the new chairman, said at the board meeting. "We will focus on field-oriented management and communication management."
New Chairman Cho Won-tae joined Hanjin Information & Communication Co., the IT arm of Hanjin Group, in August 2003, and moved to Korean Air in October 2004 and has served in key areas such as the management planning team, material division, passenger business headquarters, management strategy headquarters and cargo business headquarters.
Since taking office as president of Korean Air in 2017, new Chairman Cho Won-tae has led the change and innovation by launching a joint venture on the Pacific route with Delta Airlines and leading the successful hosting of a meeting of presidents of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines. In addition, it has helped establish a developing labor-management relationship based on active dialogue efforts with labor unions while taking the lead in improving organizational culture by expanding the scope of in-house communication.
Meanwhile, new Chairman Cho Won-tae will also assume the chairmanship of the International Air Transport Association's annual meeting in Seoul from June 1-3.
