[Focus] Hyundai Motor Reverses First-quarter Profitability with Palisade
Hyundai Motor's profitability recovered in the first quarter thanks to new car effects, including Palisade, and increased SUV sales, even amid the low growth phase of the global economy. In particular, the portion of SUV-level sales in the U.S. market as well as in the domestic market is on the rise.
Hyundai Motor Co. held a conference call on its management performance in the first quarter of 2019 at its headquarters in Seoul on Monday, and its first-quarter earnings this year amounted to 23.987.1 trillion won in sales of 1.02 million,377 units, 18.662 trillion won in automobiles, 5.38 trillion won in financial and other 5.38 trillion won in operating profit and 115.3 trillion won in profit per profit.
"The business environment has continued to be difficult due to the prolonged low growth of the global economy and increased protectionism in the U.S. and other major countries," a Hyundai Motor source said. "Despite this, strong sales of new cars such as the G90 and Palisade have led to improved product mix and profitability, especially the first quarter's profitability has improved, leading the sales of SUVs along with the Santa Fe."
The official added, however, that the effects of this mix improvement were partially offset by increased R&D-related costs and the impact of exchange rates on the falling cross-border currencies.
Hyundai Motor plans to focus on enhancing its sales competitiveness as well as improving profitability by strengthening its product mix by continuously introducing new models such as the new G80, Venue and Genesis GV80 in the second half following the launch of the new Sonata, even as demand growth is forecast to slow down this year with the focus of the major auto market.
Hyundai Motor sold 1,021,377 vehicles in the global market in the first quarter of 2019, down 2.7 percent from a year earlier.
In the domestic market, sales of G90, Palisade and others rose 8.7 percent on-year to 183,957 units, but sales in major markets such as the U.S. and China declined, recording sales of 837,420 units, down 4.9 percent year-on-year.
In terms of sales, sales in the auto sector rose 6.9 percent on-year to 23.987.1 trillion won due to increased sales of SUVs and a stabilization of incentives in the U.S. market, adding to a rise in second-hand car profits in the financial sector.
The sales cost ratio was 83.7 percent, down 0.8 percentage point from a year earlier, due to the G90, Palisade's improved mix due to new car effects, despite the increased competition caused by a drop in global demand for cars.
Operating sector costs rose 10.8 percent year-on-year to 3.87 trillion won due to increased research costs and promotional costs stemming from the launch of new models.
As a result, its operating profit jumped 21.1 percent on-year to 824.9 billion won in the first quarter of 2019, with its operating profit ratio standing at 3.4 percent, up 0.4 percentage point from a year earlier.
Ordinary profit rose 31.4 percent year-on-year to 1.2168 trillion won due to the improvement in profit and loss of related companies and the increase in foreign currency-related gains and losses, while net profit also rose 30.4 percent on-year to 953.8 billion won.
"We have achieved an improvement in first-quarter operating profit due to rising operating rates of domestic and U.S. plants and strong sales centered on SUVs," a Hyundai official said. "We will continue to make efforts to improve our profitability by injecting various new car lineups into the global market in the future."
Related to the future outlook for the business environment, Hyundai Motor predicted that uncertainties will continue due to worsening trade conditions and low growth in the auto industry amid concerns of a continued slowdown in the global economy.
To overcome this low growth trend, Hyundai Motor plans to successfully launch various new cars in major domestic and foreign markets to enhance its sales competitiveness, while focusing its full capacity on establishing a virtuous circle that can improve profitability as well as improve new car and mix by making utmost efforts to revive sales by expanding the supply of next-class vehicles with increasing demand for SUVs and other vehicles.
"We expect the new SUV boom in the domestic market to continue in major markets such as the U.S. in the future, and various new cars will be sold in the Chinese market in earnest," a Hyundai official said. "We will strive to stabilize the global market of new cars and create an early sales boom."
To that end, Hyundai plans to boost its performance by enhancing brand competitiveness with the launch of new models with perfect quality and merchantability, recovering its share in major markets such as the U.S. and China at an early date, and strengthening its responsiveness to emerging markets such as India and ASEAN.
In particular, the company plans to drive sales expansion through the launch of various new models, while actively responding to growing demand for SUVs in the global market by adding new-class SUVs to its lineup.
In addition, it will focus on improving cost structure and management efficiency through integration of production, sales, and profitability by region, including active application of new platforms with superior performance and appropriate specifications by region. It will also continue to pursue differentiated marketing and efficient incentive operation strategies.
In addition, Hyundai Motor said it will strengthen communication and cooperation with all stakeholders, including customers and shareholders, to improve the value of all together, while actively carrying out its social responsibility by expanding sincere social contribution activities.
