Lotte Chairman Shin Dong-bin met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington D.C. on Wednesday to discuss ways to expand investment and cooperate.

It is reportedly the first time for a South Korean business leader to have a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

The meeting was also attended by Matthew Potinger, senior adviser for Asian affairs at the National Security Council, Ambassador to the U.S. Cho Yoon-je, Lotte Chemical BU chief Kim Kyo-hyun and Yoon Jong-min, head of management strategy at Lotte Holdings.

Shin reportedly met with Trump and explained about the Ethan Cracker plant in the southern U.S. state of Louisiana, where it was completed on July 9, while Trump thanked him for the large-scale investment and asked him questions about the products.

When Shin explained the current situation of Lotte Group's business and the Lotte New York Palace Hotel project, President Trump said, "It was a good investment," and asked them to preserve it because it is a great building with tradition. They also talked about ways to enhance bilateral ties.

Lotte held a ceremony to mark the completion of its ethane cracker plant in the southern U.S. state of Louisiana on Tuesday. The total cost of the project is 3.1 billion U.S. dollars, the largest investment in the U.S. since the inauguration of the Trump administration, and the second-largest amount by a South Korean company in history. President Trump also welcomed Lotte's investment and sent Sylvia May Davis, deputy assistant to the White House for strategic planning, to the site of the ceremony to deliver the congratulatory message.

Lotte plans to produce an additional 400,000 tons of ethylene in consideration of the local situation, and plans to expand investment in the hotel business outside of the chemical sector.

Lotte, meanwhile, is currently operating at Alabama Engineering Plastic Production Base, Lotte New York Palace Hotel and Guam Airport Lotte Duty Free, starting with Lotte Corp.'s first entry into the U.S. in 1991. Five companies -- Lotte Chemical, Lotte Duty Free, Lotte Hotel, Lotte Global Logistics and Lotte Corp. -- are operating, and the size of their businesses has been expanding every year, with their combined investment exceeding $4 billion.
