SK이노베이션(대표이사: 김준)은 지난 14일 이사회를 열고, 중국 신규 배터리 생산공장 건설을 위한 출자를 결의했다.
최근 글로벌 전기차 배터리 수주량 증가에 따라 중국 창저우 공장에 이어 중국 내 추가적으로 생산기지를 설립하기 위한 것이다. SK이노베이션은 향후 중국 내 배터리 사업 확장을 위한 신규 배터리 공장 투자를 목적으로 총 5,799억원의 투자를 진행할 예정이다.
투자를 위한 현지법인 설립 등은 추후 진행될 예정이며, 신규 배터리 공장 부지와 규모 등 세부적인 투자계획은 아직 확정되지 않았다. 이로써 지난해 3월 헝가리 코마롬에 첫 해외 생산기지 건설에 나선 이후 누적 투자 결정금액만 약 5조원에 달한다.
SK이노베이션은 “중국과 생산적 협력을 통한 공동 성장한다는 차이나 인사이더 전략에 따라 지난해 창저우 공장 건설에 이어 중국 현지에 추가로 신규 공장을 건설하게 됐다”면서 “또 급성장하는 전기차 배터리 산업에서 주도권을 갖기 위한 투자를 적기에 진행해야 한다는 판단이며, 2022년까지 60GWh의 생산능력을 확보하기 위해 향후 신설 및 확장을 지속적으로 추진할 것”이라고 설명했다.
SK이노베이션은 지난해 8월 중국 합작 파트너인 중국 베이징자동차, 베이징전공과 합작해 장쑤성 창저우시 내 최첨단 전기차 배터리 생산공장을 착공했다. 중국 자동차업체와 해외 배터리업체 간 합작으로 중대형 배터리를 생산하는 공장을 건설하는 것은 국내 기업 중 처음으로, 약 30만m2(약 9만 평) 부지에 전기차 연산 25만대 분량인 7.5GWh 규모로 건설 중이다. 이 공장은 올해 하반기 완공해 2020년 상반기 상업생산에 돌입할 예정이다.
또한, 지난해 3월 착공한 헝가리 1공장(2019년 하반기 완공/2020년 상반기 상업가동)과 올해 2월 착공한 2공장, 그리고 지난 3월 기공식을 가진 미국 조지아주 공장이 모두 완공되는 2022년 글로벌 약 40GWh의 생산 능력을 확보하게 된다. 이번 투자한 중국 공장의 규모가 구체화되면 생산 능력은 더욱 늘어나게 된다.
SK이노베이션 배터리 사업은 미국, 중국, 유럽 글로벌 완성차 업체와의 수주 계약을 통해 올 3월말 기준 누적 수주 잔고를 ‘16년말 대비 약 13배인 430GWh까지 끌어 올리며 전기차 배터리 글로벌 시장에서 주목 받고 있다. SK이노베이션은 미국, 중국, 헝가리 등 글로벌 주요지역에 투자를 단행해 2022년까지 총 60GWh 규모의 생산능력을 확보할 계획이다.
[Focus] SK Innovation Co., Ltd. to establish a battery production plant in China by investing $570 billion.
SK Innovation (CEO Kim Jun) held a board meeting on the 14th and decided to invest in constructing a new battery production plant in China.
It is aimed at establishing additional production bases in China following its factory in Changzhou, China, following the recent increase in orders for global electric vehicle batteries. SK Innovation will carry out a total of 579.9 billion won in investment with the aim of investing in new battery plants to expand its battery business in China in the future.
The establishment of local companies for investment will be carried out later, and detailed investment plans, including the site and size of new battery plants, have yet to be finalized. This will amount to about 5 trillion won in accumulated investment since it started building its first overseas production base in Comarom, Hungary, in March last year.
"Based on China Insider's strategy of co-growth through productive cooperation with China, we will build additional new plants in China following the construction of a factory in Changzhou last year." said SK Innovation. "We also believe that investments to take the initiative in the fast-growing electric vehicle battery industry should be carried out in a timely manner and will continue to push for new and expanded in the future to secure production capacity of 60 GWh by 2022.
In August last year, SK Innovation broke ground on its cutting-edge electric vehicle battery production plant in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, in a joint venture with its Chinese joint partners Beijing Automotive and Beijing Electric Engineering. It is the first South Korean company to build a plant to produce medium- and large-sized batteries through a joint venture between a Chinese automaker and a foreign battery company, and is currently constructing 7.5 GWh, or 250,000 electric vehicles per year, on a site of about 300,000 square meters. The plant is scheduled to be completed in the second half of this year and begin commercial production in the first half of 2020.
It will also secure a production capacity of about 40 GWh globally in 2022 when the first plant in Hungary (completed in the second half of 1919, commercial operation in the first half of 2020), the second plant that began in February this year, and the U.S. Georgia plant with a groundbreaking ceremony will all be completed in March. If size of Chinese factories that invested in this plant materializes, production capacity will increase even more.
SK Innovation's battery business has drawn attention from global markets for electric vehicle batteries as it has drawn 430GWh of accumulated order backlogs as of the end of March this year, which is about 13 times larger than that of the end of 2016. SK Innovation plans to secure a combined production capacity of 60 GWh by 2022 by carrying out investments in major global regions such as the United States, China and Hungary.
