[Focus] Samsung Electronics' QLED, 1st quarter premium TV market leader

First quarter sales record of 912,000 QLED TVs, 2.5 times growth year-on-year

Samsung Electronics said it has maintained its dominant market share in the global TV market in the first quarter of this year, recording a 29.4 percent market share based on IHS Markit.

Its market share increased 0.8 percentage point from 28.6 percent in first quarter of last year.

A reason why Samsung Electronics is maintaining strong performance that is close to 30% is because it actively targets large and premium markets with QLED TVs at the center.

In the first quarter of this year, global sales of QLED TVs reached 912,000 units, growing about 2.5 times from 367,000 units in the first quarter of last year, making it a mainstream premium TV.

In particular, Samsung sold 896,000 of them, nearly three times the 337,000 units sold in the same period last year.

Sales of OLED TVs were 611,000 units in the first quarter of this year. In the first quarter of last year, 470,000 units were sold.

QLED TVs are also far ahead of OLED TVs in terms of amount by selling 8K products in earnest this year and expanding their lineups.

In the first quarter of this year, $1.87 billion worth of QLED TVs were sold, with $1.365 billion for OLED TVs.

QLED is a technology that leads premium TV markets and has excellent color capabilities that have excellent durability and is characterized by high contrast ratio and optimal HDR image implementation based on industry's highest level of brightness.

Meanwhile, the overall TV market edged up in the first quarter from a year earlier to about 52 million units in terms of quantity, but in terms of amount, it edged down from a year earlier to about $25 billion due to a drop in market prices.

However, as the trend of large-scale products continues, the share of markets with 70 inches or larger has grown sharply from 5.1 percent to 7.6 percent and from 14.8 percent to 19.1 percent in the 60-inch range.

"The continued growth of QED TVs is thanks to consumers' choice in the market after all," a Samsung Electronics official said, adding that the company will deliver more value to consumers and strengthen its industry leadership this year by expanding the QLED 8K market."
