한국항공우주산업㈜(KAI)은 지난 24일 태국 정부와 600억 원 규모의 계약을 체결했다고 26일 밝혔다. 이번 계약은 태국 공군의 T-50TH에 레이더와 적의 위협에 대응하기 위한 RWR, CMDS를 장착하는 개조·개량 사업이다. 또한 교육훈련, 수리부속, 지원장비 납품이 포함되며 2021년 10월까지 최종 납품할 예정이다.
서울 소공동 롯데호텔에서 개최된 계약식에서 KAI 김조원 사장은 “최고의 품질과 기술력으로 태국 공군이 보여주신 신뢰에 보답할 것을 약속드린다.”고 강조했다.
이에 태국 반누퐁 세야용카(Bhanupong Seyayongka) 획득위원장은 “태국공군은 비용대비 높은 효율성이 입증된 T-50TH에 깊은 신뢰를 가지고 있다”며 “앞으로도 친밀한 동반자적 관계가 유지되기를 기대한다.”고 화답했다.
태국 공군은 이번 3차 계약을 통해 T-50TH 전술입문훈련기의 성능을 제고하고 아울러 원활한 운영을 통해 높은 가동률을 유지하기를 기대하고 있다. 태국 공군은 지난 2015년 T-50TH 4대를 구매한데 이어 2017년 8대를 추가로 구매하는 2차 계약을 체결한 바 있다. 1차로 계약한 4대는 작년 3월부터 전투기 조종사 훈련을 위한 실전배치를 마치고 운용 중에 있으며 추가로 구매한 8대는 올해 말부터 납품을 시작해 2020년 중 납품이 완료될 예정이다. KAI는 태국 공군의 T-50에 대한 만족도가 높아 경공격기 FA-50과 기본훈련기 KT-1 등의 추가 수출도 가능하다는 입장이다.
T-50 계열은 태국, 필리핀, 인도네시아 등에서 운용되며 고등 훈련과 전술입문은 물론 경공격기로도 활용이 가능하여 효율성이 높은 기종이다. KAI는 이러한 강점을 기반으로 말레이시아, 필리핀, 아르헨티나 등 중점국을 대상으로 수출활동을 전개하고 있으며 고객의 다양한 니즈를 맞추기 위해 무장능력과 항속거리 확장 등 맞춤형 성능개량도 추진하고 있다.
말레이시아 공군은 36대 규모의 고등훈련기 및 경전투기 획득사업을 추진 중으로 주변국 공군이 운용하며 성능과 후속지원 능력이 검증된 FA-50에 관심을 보이고 있다. 필리핀에서 운용 중인 FA-50PH 또한 실전에서 주목할만한 성과로 호평을 받고 있으며 향후 경전투기 추가 사업에서도 우위를 점할 것으로 기대된다.

Deploy radar and defense systems on T-50TH to double air power efficiency
Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) said Wednesday that it has signed a 60 billion won deal with the Thai government on Monday. The contract is a remodeling and improvement project that will equip T-50TH of the Thai Air Force with RWR and CMDB to counter threats from the enemy. It will also include the delivery of education and training, repair units and support equipment and will be delivered by October 2021.
At the signing ceremony held at Lotte Hotel in Sogong-dong, Seoul, KAI President Kim Jo-won stressed, "I promise to reciprocate the trust shown by the Thai Air Force with the best quality and technology."
"The Thai Air Force has deep trust in the proven cost-effective T-50TH," said Bannupong Seyayongka, head of the Thai Committee for Acquisition.
The Thai Air Force hopes to enhance the performance of the T-50TH tactical introductory trainer and maintain a high operational rate through smooth operation through the third contract. The Thai Air Force purchased four T-50THs in 2015 and signed a second contract to purchase eight more in 2017. Four of the first contracts have been in operation since March last year, and eight more are expected to be delivered by the end of this year and will be completed by 2020. KAI says additional exports of light attack aircraft, FA-50 and basic trainer KT-1, are also possible due to the Thai Air Force's high satisfaction with the T-50.
The T-50 line operates in Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia and is highly efficient as it can be used as a light attack aircraft as well as advanced training and tactical input. Based on these strengths, KAI has been developing export activities for Malaysia, the Philippines and Argentina, and is also pushing for customized performance improvements such as armed capabilities and expanding range to meet diverse needs of its customers.
Malaysia's Air Force is working on a project to acquire 36 advanced trainer jets and light combat aircraft, and is showing interest in the FA-50, which is operated by the air forces of neighboring countries and has proven its ability to perform and provide follow-up support. FA-50PH, which is operating in the Philippines, is also well-received for its remarkable performance in the field and is expected to gain an upper hand in further light combat operations in the future.
