대한민국의 세계 최초 5G 상용화를 이끈 KT가 5G 월드 어워드 2019에서 국내 기업으로는 최다인 4개 분야를 석권하며 통신강국 대한민국의 위상을 세계 무대에 알렸다.
KT(회장 황창규)는 12일(현지시각) 영국 런던에서 열린 5G 월드 어워드 2019에서 최고 5G 상용화(Best 5G Commercial Launch), 최고 5G 혁신 시도(Best Innovative 5G Trial) 분야 등 총 4개 분야에서 수상을 차지했다고 밝혔다.
5G 월드 어워드는 글로벌 정보통신 기술 연구기관 인포마(Informa)가 주관하는 세계적 권위의 시상식이다. 세계 최대 5G 컨퍼런스인 ‘5G 월드 서밋’ 및 300여개 전시기업과 1만 5천여명의 방문객이 참가하는 전시회 ‘TechXLR8’과 동시에 개최된다. 2010년 LTE부터 현재 5G에 이르기까지 LTE 및 5G 통신기술·서비스, 네트워크 관제 기술, 보안 기술 등 총 14개 분야에서 세계적으로 가장 뛰어난 성과와 혁신을 이뤄낸 기업 및 서비스를 선정한다.
KT는 이번 5G 월드 어워드에 최고 5G 상용화, 최고 5G 혁신 시도 등 총 7개 분야에 8개 5G 아이템을 출품해 모두 최종 후보에 올랐으며, ▲ 최고 5G 상용화 ▲ 서비스 혁신(Telecom Service Innovation) ▲ 최고 네트워크 자동화 기술(Best Network Automation Technology) ▲ 최고 5G 혁신 시도 분야에서 수상하는 성과를 올렸다.
특히, KT는 국내 참가 기업 중에는 최다인 총 4개 분야에서 수상을 하며, KT의 글로벌 5G 리더십을 전 세계적으로 인정받았다. 또한, 최고 5G 상용화 분야에서는 5G 서비스를 제공하는 전 세계 통신사업자를 제치고 수상해 대한민국의 세계 최초 5G 상용화를 이끈 공로를 인정 받았다.
‘최고 5G 상용화 부문’은 5G 상용화를 위한 기술 우수성과 서비스 혁신성을 평가하는 분야이다. KT는 세계 최고 5G 서비스 제공을 위해 국내 최다인 8개의 5G 엣지 통신센터를 구축하여 5G의 핵심 요소 중 하나인 초저지연 서비스를 원활하게 제공하고 있다. 또한, 고객 최우선 전략을 바탕으로 한 데이터 완전무제한 요금제 ‘슈퍼플랜’ 등 차별화된 마케팅 프로그램이 높은 평가를 받았다.
이날 시상식에서 KT는 서비스 혁신 분야에서 5G 커뮤니케이션 서비스 ‘리얼360’, 최고 네트워크 자동화 기술 분야에서 ‘닥터 로렌(Dr. Lauren)’, 최고 5G 혁신 시도 분야에서 ‘5G 리모트 콕핏(5G Remote Cockpit)으로 수상을 차지했다. 리얼360은 넥밴드형 360도 카메라를 활용해 어떤 환경에서도 원하는 영상을 입체적으로 공유할 수 있는 KT의 대표적인 실시간 5G 커뮤니케이션 서비스이다. 두 손이 자유롭기 때문에 이동 중에도 액티비티를 즐길 수 있는 서비스로 관심을 끌고 있다.
KT 융합기술원에서 개발한 AI(인공지능) 기반 네트워크 관제 솔루션 닥터 로렌은 네트워크 운용 빅데이터를 인공지능 기술로 분석하여 네트워크 장애 발생 시 그 원인을 최대 1분 안에 규명하는 세계 최초 AI 장애 원인 분석 솔루션이다. 사람에게 의존하던 기존 네트워크 장애 조치를 KT의 네트워크 운용 노하우와 AI 전문인력의 개발 능력을 바탕으로 빠르고 정확한 장애조치가 가능하도록 개선한 것이 특징이다.
5G 최고 혁신 시도 분야에서 수상한 5G 리모트 콕핏은 융합기술원이 개발한 자율주행 원격관제 시스템이다. 도로 위에서 발생한 사고의 원인을 실시간으로 파악하고, 주행 중인 차량 내 위급상황 발생 시 원격제어를 통한 관제센터의 즉각적인 개입으로 차량의 안전한 운행을 보장한다. 지난해 12월 국내 최초 자율주행 실험도시 K-City에서 선보인 바 있는 5G 리모트 콕핏은 다가오는 자율주행 시대의 안전을 위해 필수적인 기술로 주목받고 있다.
KT 5G사업본부장 박현진 상무는 “5G 월드 어워드 수상 성과는 세계 최초 5G 상용화를 이끈 KT의 5G 기술력을 전 세계적으로 인정받은 쾌거”라며 “앞으로도 세계 최고 수준의 5G 품질을 확보하고, 이를 기반으로 혁신적인 5G 서비스를 지속적으로 선보이겠다”고 밝혔다.

KT, which led South Korea's commercialization of 5G for the first time in the world, dominated four fields at the 5G World Awards 2019, the largest number of domestic companies, and announced Korea's status as a telecommunication powerhouse to the world stage.
KT (Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu) made an announcement on the 12th (local time) that it has won awards in a total of four areas including Best 5G Commercial Launch and Best Innovative 5G Trials at the 5G World Awards 2019 in London.
The 5G World Awards is a world-renowned award ceremony organized by Infoma, a global information and communication technology research institute. It will be held simultaneously with the world's largest 5G conference, the 5G World Summit, and the exhibition "TechXLR8," which will feature some 300 exhibition companies and 15,000 visitors. It will select companies and services that have achieved the best performance and innovation in the world in a total of 14 areas, including LTE and 5G communication technologies and services, network control technologies and security technologies, from LTE to current 5G in 2010.
KT was nominated for eight 5G items in seven fields including commercialization of top 5G and attempt to innovate top 5G at this 5G World Awards, and received results in commercialization of top 5G service innovation, Best Network Automation Technology, and 5G innovation.
In particular, KT has been recognized worldwide for its global 5G leadership by winning four awards, the largest number of awards among domestic companies. In addition, in the field of commercialization of the top 5G, the company was awarded the prize by beating the global telecommunication service provider to lead the commercialization of the world's first 5G.
'Best 5G commercialization sector' is a field that evaluates excellence of technologies and service innovation for commercialization of 5G. To provide the world's best 5G service, KT has built eight 5G edge communication centers, the nation's largest, to smoothly provide ultra-low latency services, one of the key elements of 5G. In addition, differentiated marketing programs such as 'Superplan', which is a data unlimited rate system based on customer priority strategy, were highly evaluated.
At the award ceremony, KT won the award for its 5G communication service 'Real 360' in service innovation, 'Dr. Lauren' in the field of top network automation technology, and '5G Remote Cockpit' in the field of trying to innovate up to 5G. Real360 is KT's flagship real-time 5G communication service, which allows users to use a neck-band-type 360-degree camera to share images they want in three-dimensional terms in any environment. Since the hands are free, it is attracting attention as a service that allows users to enjoy activity while on the move.
Dr. Lauren, an AI (Artificial Intelligence) based network control solution developed by KT Convergence Technology Institute, is the world's first AI failure analysis solution that analyzes network operation big data with artificial intelligence technology and identifies causes of AI failure in the event of network failure in up to one minute. Its characteristic is that it has improved existing network failure measures that used to rely on humans to enable fast and accurate failover based on KT's know-how in network operation and AI experts' ability to develop them.
5G Remote Cockpit, which is a winner in 5G's biggest innovation attempt, is a self-driving remote control system that was developed by Convergence Technology Institute. The cause of the accident on the road is identified in real time and the immediate intervention of the control center through remote control ensures safe operation in the event of an emergency in the vehicle in motion. Introduced in December last year in K-City, Korea's first self-driving experimental city, the 5G remote cockpit is drawing attention as an essential technology for the safety of the upcoming era of self-driving.
