[Focus] LG Uplus to enter the world's first 5G cloud VR game market

LG Uplus is going to introduce 5G-based Cloud VR game for the first time in the world.

LG Uplus (vice chairman Ha Hyun-hoi) announced that it will hold a press conference at its headquarters in Yongsan, Seoul, on the 2nd and will enter the cloud VR game market based on 5G network for the first time in the world.

LG Uplus has decided to expand its infrastructure for 5G-based cloud game services, source and production of famous contents, and to strategically cooperate with Kakao VX and Lotte World to create a virtuous cycle ecosystem for VR games.

In order to expand the experience of cloud VR games, the company also plans to set up 5G Cloud VR game experience zones at its Yongsan and Magok offices in Seoul and some 90 retail outlets across the country starting this month to provide customers with new experiences.

"After announcing plans for the world's first 4K 3D AR contents service last month, we can introduce the world's first cloud VR game within a month." said Kim Joon-hyung, head of LG Uplus' 5G service promotion group.

■ Based on 5G network, it is a new format VR game era that has never been experienced before.
Cloud VR games can be enjoyed by streaming high-quality VR games whenever a 5G network is established, as actual games are run on cloud servers without complicated processes such as running PCs and games, connecting cables and installing devices to run VR games every time.

Although VR games are highly dependent on HMD (Head Mounted Display) terminal performance due to characteristics of VR games, once 5G network-based cloud services are available, high-quality contents can be streamed from low-quality devices regardless of performance of devices.

Due to limited bandwidth and speed quality of 150Mbps or less in actual LTE environments, cloud-based VR games were not able to be operated reliably.

Currently, VR games have been divided into Android-based 3DoF wireless VR games that are used by inserting a smartphone into a cardboard HMD device or enjoying a low-quality integrated HMD, and PC-based 6DoF wired VR games that enjoy high-performance PCs, spatial recognition sensors, and HMD devices by connecting cables.

LG Uplus' 5G Cloud VR game allows users to enjoy high-quality 6DoF realistic games through streaming using only wireless HMD without having to purchase and install high-performance PCs and cables. Therefore, the company will introduce a new format of VR games that allow users to play wirelessly anytime, anywhere without space constraints.

In addition, subscription-type service models can be implemented that allow customers to easily select and enjoy popular VR games at home and abroad.

Interest in VR games such as positive announcements from major global research institutes is also growing.

Digi Capital predicted that VR games will be 40% out of 30 billion dollars in the VR market in 2020, VR market will be 10 billion dollars in 2020, TRACTICA will be 20 billion dollars in the VR market and TRACTICA will be 70 billion dollars in 2020 with software and hardware.

In addition, global research firm Nielsen forecast that the global VR market will grow from $3.6 billion in 2018 to $6.2 billion in 2019 and $16.3 billion in 2022.

In particular, the VR market, which uses HMD (Head Mounted Display) devices, is forecast to grow about 16-fold from $500 million in 2018 to $1 billion in 2019 and $8.2 billion in 2022.

■ Partnering with the nation's leading VR content company to provide premium VR content
To provide customers with a premium VR game experience, LG Uplus plans to provide the first batch of 10 types of PC VR games and popular VR console games on online digital game platform Steam(store.steampowered.com) and expand the service to more than 20 types at the end of August.

It also plans to secure VR contents of a genre that can be enjoyed by all ages through technology and content partnerships with Lotte World, the nation's top VR content company, and Kakao VX, and expand the number to about 20 by August.

Lotte World is the nation's top VR content-holding company, which has been working with small and medium-sized companies since 2016 to develop some 10 kinds of VR game content.

The partnership between the two companies will allow LG Uplus customers to enjoy content such as "Across Dark," a popular content that operates within Lotte World, and "French Revolution 2" without restrictions on the venue.

In addition, Lotte World has a lab for VR development, which will also serve as a test bed for LG Uplus' development of 5G cloud VR games.

Starting with the screen golf service, Kakao VX is expanding its business scope by launching "Kakao Golf Reservation" and "Kakao Friends Golf" this year, combining sports and IT technologies.

VR Content developed "VR Golf Online" in 2017 and is preparing for a "Tema Park Concept Game" based on Kakao Friends IP, aiming for the second half of next year.

Through the partnership, the three companies plan to cooperate in jointly developing and providing cloud VR content and platforms, and establish themselves as leading providers of 5G-based VR content.

■Faster 5G cloud-based services

LG Uplus plans to establish 5G cloud-based infrastructure by the end of the year and continue to expand cloud-based services such as VR games that can take advantage of 5G ultra-low latency characteristics.

In particular, LG Uplus continuously secures its content competitiveness and technology through partnerships with various VR companies at home and abroad, and serves various genres of content that can be experienced through VR.

To that end, the company will set up 5G Cloud VR game experience zones at 90 direct stores nationwide to provide new experiences to customers.

"We are planning to expand cloud-based services that can best utilize characteristics of 5G and commercialize them by checking customer acceptance by end of this year." said Director Kim Joon-hyung of LG Uplus' 5G service promotion group.
