삼성중공업이 세계 최대 컨테이너선 건조 기록을 또 다시 갱신하며, 2만 TEU급 '메가 컨테이너선' 시장을 주도하고 있다.
삼성중공업은 스위스 해운선사인 MSC( Mediterranean Shipping Company)로부터 2017년 9월에 수주한 23,000TEU급 컨테이너선 6척 중 첫 번째 선박 건조를 계약일보다 3주 가량 일찍 완성해, 지난 6일 성공적으로 출항했다고 8일 밝혔다.
'MSC GÜLSÜN'(굴슨)으로 명명된 이 선박은 길이 400m, 폭 61.5m, 높이 33.2m로 20ft(피트) 컨테이너 23,756개를 한 번에 실어 나를 수 있는 초대형 컨테이너선이다. 현재까지 전 세계에서 건조된 컨테이너선 가운데 가장 큰 선박이다. 20ft 컨테이너 1개의 길이는 약 6.1m로 23,756개를 한 줄로 연결하면 그 길이가 무려 145km로 서울에서 대전까지의 직선 거리에 해당한다.
또한 이 선박은 삼성중공업이 독자 개발한 차세대 스마트십 시스템 '에스베슬(SVESSEL)'이 탑재돼 안전하고 경제적인 운항이 가능하며, 황산화물 배출 규제에 대응하기 위한 스크러버(Scrubber) 설치는 물론 향후 LNG 연료 추진선박으로도 쉽게 개조할 수 있도록 설계(LNG-ready)한 친환경 스마트 선박이다.
한편, 삼성중공업은 1990년대부터 컨테이너선 대형화를 선도해 오고 있다. 5,000TEU가 주종을 이루던 1990년에 세계 최초로 6,200TEU급을 개발했으며, 2000년에는 7,700TEU, 2002년 8,100TEU를 연이어 개발하며 더 많은 컨테이너를 싣고, 더 빠른 속도로 운항할 수 있는 컨테이너선으로 시장을 주도했다.
이후 2004년 12,000TEU급 컨테이너선 개발에 성공하며 5년만에 적재량을 2배로 늘렸으며, 2015년에는 일본 MOL社로부터 20,100TEU급 컨테이너선 4척을 수주하며 세계 최초로 2만 TEU급 컨테이너선 시대를 열기도 했다.
삼성중공업은 이번 23,000TEU급 컨테이너선 인도로 이 분야 세계 최대 크기 기록을 다시 한번 갈아 치우며, 그 명성을 계속 이어가고 있다.
삼성중공업 관계자는 "삼성중공업이 보유한 세계 최대 규모의 예인수조 등 각종 시험설비와 우수한 연구 인력을 토대로 컨테이너선의 대형화를 주도해 왔다"며, "올해 하반기 발주 예정인 2만 TEU급 이상 초대형 컨테이너선도 적극 공략해 메가 컨테이너선 시장에서의 주도권을 계속 확보해 나갈 것"이라고 강조했다.

Samsung Heavy Industries is again renewing its record for building the world's largest container ship, leading the 20,000 TEU "mega container ship" market.
Samsung Heavy Industries Co. said Tuesday that it completed the construction of the first of six 23,000 TEU-class container ships from Swiss shipping company MSC in September 2017, about three weeks earlier than the contract date, and successfully set sail on July 6.
Named "MSC GÜLSÜN" (Goulson), the vessel is a super-sized container ship that can carry 23,756 20-ft (foot) containers at once, with a length of 400 meters, width of 61.5 meters and height of 33.2 meters. It is the largest container ship built in the world to date. One 20-foot container is about 6.1 meters long, and if 23,756 containers are connected in a single row, it is 145 kilometers long, equivalent to a straight line distance from Seoul to Daejeon.
In addition, the vessel is equipped with Samsung Heavy Industries' next-generation smartship system called "SVESSEL," which enables safe and economical operation, and is designed to be easily converted into LNG-fueled vessels as well as to install a scrubber to cope with regulations on sulfur oxide emissions.
Samsung Heavy Industries, meanwhile, has been leading the expansion of container ships since the 1990s. It developed the world's first 6,200-TEU class in 1990, when 5,000 TEUs were dominant, followed by 7,700 TEUs in 2000 and 8,100 TEUs in 2002, carrying more containers and leading the market with container ships that can operate at higher speeds.
In 2004, the company succeeded in developing 12,000 TEU container ships and doubled its load in five years. In 2015, it won four 20,100 TEU container ships from Japan's MOL, opening the era of 20,000 TEU container ships for the first time in the world.
Samsung Heavy Industries is continuing its reputation by again breaking the world's largest record in the field with the latest delivery of a 23,000-TEU container ship.
"We have been leading the expansion of container ships based on various testing facilities such as the world's largest tug-of-war and excellent research personnel owned by Samsung Heavy Industries." said a representative for Samsung Heavy Industries. "We will continue to secure leadership in the mega container ship market by actively targeting container ships with 20,000 TEU or higher that will be ordered in the second half of this year."
