아무런 반주 없이 목소리 하나만으로 듣는 이들에게 감동을 선사하는 것이 바로 '성악'이다. 인공지능이 음악을 기계적으로 만들어내고, 과거에는 볼 수 없었던 다양한 음악 장르가 탄생하는 가운데에서 성악이 여전히 많은 사람들에게 사랑을 받는 이유도 이 세상 모든 악기 중 가장 아름다운 소리를 내는 악기가 인간의 울림통이기 때문이다. 특히 전 세계적으로 명성을 떨치고 있는 대한민국 출신 성악가들의 활약으로 국내에서도 클래식 음악에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는 가운데 지난해 문화체육관광부가 주최한 2018 신진여성성문화인상을 수상한 소프라노 오신영(31)이 클래식의 대중화를 위해 성악의 기초를 둔 자신의 목소리로 다양한 영역의 음악 활동에 나서고 있어 주목된다.

[비즈니스리포트]는 지난 5일 서울 강남구 논현동 임피리얼팰리스서울 호텔에서 신진여성문화인으로 주목받고 있는 소프라노 오신영을 만나 성악가로서의 삶과 최근 자신의 클래식 성악 본연의 소리를 통해 다양한 음악 영역으로 활동 보폭을 확대하고 있는 그의 이야기를 들어봤다.

 

- 음악가, 소프라노로서 국내외 음악.공연계에서 주목받고 있다. 본인소개를 한다면.

"소프라노 성악가다. 뉴욕 Mannes 음대에서 소프라노 석사를 마치고 귀국한지 3년이 됐다. 한국에 들어온 뒤 소프라노로서 국립, 시립오페라단과 함께 오페라 공연이나 콘서트 활동 및 오케스트라 협연 활동을 꾸준하게 이어오고 있다.”

- 문화체육관광부 주최 '2018 올해의 신진여성문화인상'을 수상했다.

"신진여성문화인상이란 상의 명칭에서 볼 수 있듯이, '신진'...일종의 신인상이라고 보면 된다. 광주시립오페라단에서 '헨젤과 그레텔' 공연을 하고 있을 때였는데, 문화 분야, 오페라 가수 부문에서 수상했다. 신인상은 받을 수 있는 시기가 그야말로 '신인시절'로 한정되어 있기 때문에 개인적으로 더욱 의미가 있는 뜻 깊은 상이었다."

- 음악인의 삶으로 접어들게 된 사연이 궁금하다.

"음악을 공부하기 시작한 것은 어렸을 때 피아노를 배우면서다. 하지만 성악가로서 꿈을 꾸게 된 것은 성악가 조수미 선생님 공연을 보고 큰 감동을 받으면서부터다. 조수미 선생님이 하셨던 노래를 어머니 앞에서 종종 따라 부르곤 했었는데, 음악을 전공하셨던 어머니께서 제 소리가 성악가로서 가능성이 있다고 판단하셨고 성악을 해보라고 하셨다. 중학교 3학년 말부터 본격적으로 성악을 공부하기 시작해 연세대 성악과로 진학했고, 뉴욕 Mannes 음대에서 석사를 마쳤다."

- 연세대 성악과 수석졸업, 명문 뉴욕 Mannes음대를 우수한 성적으로 졸업했는데 학창 시절의 모습이 궁금하다. 아울러 성악을 하는 후배들에게 공부TIP을 전한다면.

"특별한 학생이었다기보다는 성악 공부를 즐겼던 것 같다. 예를 들어 같이 어울리던 친구들과 일종의 '스터디' 모임을 많이 했었는데, 반주 하며 같이 노래하는 그런 시간이었다. 이 시간들이 음악공부인 동시에 재밌게 노는 방법이었던 것 같다. 물론 여느 여대생들처럼 맛있는 것 먹고 커피숍 가서 수다도 떨고, 같이 공연도 많이 보러 다녔는데 큰 틀에서 보면 전체적으로 생활 자체가 음악, 성악과 관련된 활동이 많았던 기억이다."

"학부를 수석 졸업한 것은 큰 기쁨이었고 감사한 기억이다. 하지만 수석졸업생은 과에서 매년 1명씩은 나오는 것이라 그 자체가 음악적으로 엄청 뛰어난 성과라고 생각하지는 않았다. 학부 1학년 때는 선생님을 하려는 생각이 있어서 교직자격증을 따려고 했었다. 교직자격증은 한 학년에서 3명에게만 주기 때문에 필기시험에도 많은 노력을 기울였는데 좋은 결과로 나타났던 것 같다. 당시에 학교에서 오페라 주연도 했고, 좋은 선생님들을 만나게 되서 성악 실력이 그때 많이 늘었는데, 결과적으로 교직의 길보다는 소프라노의 길을 가게 됐다."

"아직도 계속 배우고 있고, 기라성 같은 음악계 선배님들이 많이 계시기 때문에 후배들에게 무언가 선배로서 성악을 잘하는 방법에 대해서 말한다는 것이 너무 조심스럽기는 하다. 하지만 굳이 제 경험에 빗대서 얘기한다면 학생 시절 선생님들께서 '포기하지 말고 오래 버티는 것이 중요하다'고 하셨는데 이 부분을 강조하고 싶다. 물론 무작정 버티는 것이 아니라 기회가 왔을 때 잡을 수 있도록 자기 실력을 성실하게 잘 준비해 두는 것이 중요하다. 자기 실력을 잘 준비해둬야 한다는 것은 학창시절 뿐 아니라 지금도 그런 마음가짐으로 하고 있다."

 

- 수많은 공연을 해왔겠지만, 개인적으로 가장 기억에 남는 공연이 있다면.

"가장 기억에 남는 공연을 딱 하나만 꼽으라면 너무 어렵다. 최근 공연을 기준으로 봤을 때 각기 다른 이유로 기억에 남는 공연들을 꼽을 수 있을 것 같다. 우선 가장 하고 싶었던 것은 국립이나 시립교향악단과 협연을 하고 싶었는데, 처음 같이 했던 협연이 기억에 남는다. 오페라에서 하나 꼽는다면 너무나 기다렸고 하고 싶었던 공연이 리골레토인데 결국 공연을 하게 되서 기쁘다."

"헨젤과 그레텔은 3년 연속 광주시립오페라단, 국립오페라단과 하고 있는 작품이다. 헨젤과 그레텔은 제가 공연을 하게 될지 전혀 예상치 못했지만 가장 긴 기간동안 많은 공연을 하고 있다는 점에서 기억에 남는다. 개인적으로 종교가 기독교이기도 해서 오라토리오나 종교 음악에도 관심이 많다. 그런 의미에서 작년에 제주 도립 교향악단과 함께한 나인심포니 연주도 기억에 많이 남는다.”

- 무대에 오를 때 의상은 직접 고르는지 궁금하다. 기준이 있다면. 아울러 공연을 할 때 외에 평소 스타일링도 궁금하다.

"무대에 설 때 입는 의상은 직접 고른다. 연주와 배역을 잘 고려하고, 전체적으로는 공연을 돋보이게 할 수 있는 의상을 우선 기준으로 하고 있다. 사실 무대에 오르는 성악가로서 가장 중요하게 생각하고 집중하는 것은 관객에게 전달하는 소리다. 하지만 음악 내용과 배역, 공연에 맞는 드레스 선택은 관객의 몰입도를 높일 수 있다는 점에서 중요하다. 공연을 처음 시작할 때 드레스를 구매하거나 대여하면서 시행착오가 참 많았다. 그래서 집에 안 입는 드레스가 많은데, 경험이 많아질 수 록 의상을 선택하는 눈이 생기는 것 같다."

"공연 할 때 외 평소에는 정말 수수하게 다닌다. 공연할 때는 풀메이크업을 제대로 해야하기 때문에 평소에는 기본적인 관리 외에 메이크업을 진하게 잘 안한다."

- 평소 클래식과 오페라곡만 듣나. 영감을 얻는 방법이 있다면.

"째즈, 힙합 등 대중적인 음악도 좋아한다. 하지만 클래식의 레퍼토리만큼 잘 알지 못해서 대중음악은 클래식만큼 즐겨듣지는 않는 것 같다. 아무래도 클래식 음악에 대해서 상대적으로 대중음악보다 더 잘 알고 있다 보니 클래식을 더 듣게 된다."

"영감은 여행을 통해서 얻는 경우가 많은 것 같다. 여행하는 동안 듣는 것, 보는 것, 느끼는 것 모든 것들이 영감에 대상이 된다."

"과거에는 지금처럼 공연을 유심히 안봤다. 최근에는 공연을 볼 때 배우들의 동선이나 연기, 노래, 외적으로 풍겨져 나오는 분위기까지 상당히 주의 깊게 보고 있는데 여기에서도 영감을 얻거나 도움을 받는 경우가 많다."

 

- 음악인으로서 이루고자 하는 궁극적 목표나 포부가 있다면.

"음악으로 승부를 보고 싶다. 제가 하고 싶은 음악으로 음악계는 물론 대중들에게도 인정받고 승부를 내고 싶다는 것이다. 특히 클래식을 바탕으로 대중적인 소재로도 많은 도전을 해보고 싶다. 제 전공인 클래식 소프라노를 바탕으로 저의 소리가 커버할 수 있는 역할이 있다면 해보고 싶다는 것이다. 뮤지컬도 작년에 제안이 들어온 것이 있었다. 제안 회사로부터 전화를 받고서 관심이 생겼다. 영화음악이나 OST에도 관심이 많아서 도전해보고 싶다."

[Power Interview] Soprano Oh Shin-young "I'm going to challenge a variety of genres based on classical music."

It is "voice music" that impresses listeners with just one voice without any accompaniment. Amid AI's mechanical creation of music and the creation of various musical genres that have not been seen in the past, the reason why vocal music is still loved by many people is because the instrument that makes the most beautiful sound of all the instruments in the world is the human throbbing pain. Especially, amid growing interest in classical music in Korea due to the performances of vocalists from around the world, it is noteworthy that the soprano Oh Shin-young, 31, who won the 2018 New Female Culture Award hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism last year, is engaged in various musical activities with her voice based on her voice to popularize classical music.

[Business Report] met soprano Oh Shin-young, a rising female cultural figure, at the Imperial Palace Seoul Hotel in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul on May 5 and listened to her life as a vocalist and her recent activities in various areas of music through her original sound of classical music.

- Domestic and foreign music as a musician and soprano.It is drawing attention in the performing world. If you introduce yourself.

"A soprano singer. It has been three years since he returned from a soprano master's degree at Mannes College in New York. Since coming to Korea, I have steadily continued opera performances, concert activities and orchestra collaborations with the national and municipal opera companies as a soprano."

- It won the "2018 New Female Culture of the Year Award" hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

"As you can see in the name of the Sinjin Women's Cultural Impression, Shinjin ...It's a rookie award. It was when the Gwangju Metropolitan Opera was performing "Hansel and Gretel," which won the cultural and opera singers categories. It was a meaningful award that was more meaningful to me personally because the timing of the rookie award was simply limited to "new age.""

- I'm curious about the story of entering a musician's life.

I started studying music when I was young, learning piano. However, it was when I was deeply moved by the performance of singer Jo Su-mi that led me to dream of becoming a vocalist. I used to sing along to my mother in front of me, but my mother, who majored in music, decided that my sound was possible as a vocalist and asked me to perform the vocal music. He began studying vocal music in earnest at the end of his third year in middle school, went on to study vocal music at Yonsei University, and completed his master's degree at Mannes College of Music in New York."

- I graduated from Yonsei University's vocal department and prestigious New York's Mannes College of Music with excellent grades, and I wonder how I was when I was in school. In addition, if you deliver your study TIP to the younger singers who play the vocal music.

I think I enjoyed studying vocal music rather than being a special student. For example, we had a lot of "study" meetings with friends we used to hang out with, and we sang along with them. I think these times were a way to study music and have fun. Of course, I ate delicious food like any other college girl, went to a coffee shop, chatted, and went to see many performances together. In a big way, life itself was a memory of many activities related to music and vocal music."

"It was a great pleasure and a grateful memory to graduate from the department at the top. However, I did not think that it was a great achievement musically because one senior graduate comes out of the department every year. When I was in my first year of college, I wanted to get a teaching license because I wanted to be a teacher. Since teaching certificates are given to only three students in one grade, I put a lot of effort into writing tests, which seems to have resulted in good results. At that time, he starred in an opera at school and met good teachers, so his vocal skills improved a lot, and as a result, he went to the path of soprano rather than the length of teaching."

"I'm still learning, and there are a lot of seniors in the music industry like Ki Ra-sung, so I'm too cautious to tell my juniors about how to excel at vocal music as a senior. However, I would like to emphasize this point when my teachers in my school said, "It's important not to give up but to last long." Of course, it is important to prepare your skills faithfully so that you can catch them when the opportunity comes, not just stand by. It is not only his school days that he should prepare his skills well, but he still has that mindset."

- You've done a lot of performances, but personally, if you have the most memorable performances.

It`s too hard to pick just one performance that is most memorable. Based on recent performances, I think we can pick memorable performances for different reasons. First of all, I wanted to perform with the National or City Symphony Orchestra, but my first collaboration with them was memorable. If I pick one in the opera, I waited so long and wanted to do it. I'm glad that I ended up performing in the end."

Hansel and Gretel have been working with the Gwangju Municipal Opera Company and the National Opera Company for three consecutive years. Hansel and Gretel didn't expect me to perform at all, but they are memorable because they are performing for the longest period. Personally, I am interested in oratorio or religious music because religion is also Christian. In that sense, my performance of Nine Simpoeni with the Jeju Provincial Symphony Orchestra last year also remains in my memory a lot."

- I wonder if you choose your own costume when you go on stage. If there is a standard. In addition, I am curious about the usual styling in addition to performing.

I choose the clothes I wear when I stand on the stage. It considers performance and roles well, and as a whole it is based on costumes that can highlight performances. In fact, as a vocal performer on stage, the most important thing to think and focus on is the sound that the audience delivers. However, choosing the right dress for music content, roles and performances is important in that it can increase the audience's immersion. When I first started the show, I bought or rented a dress, and there was a lot of trial and error. So I have a lot of dresses that I don't wear at home, and I think I have eyes that can choose rock costumes that can become more experienced."

When we perform, we usually walk around very modestly. He usually doesn't do makeup well in addition to basic management because he has to do full makeup properly when performing."

- Do you usually only listen to classical and opera songs? If there's a way to get inspiration.

I also like popular music such as jazz and hip-hop. But I don't seem to enjoy pop music as much as classical music because I don't know as well as classical repertoire. Because I know more about classical music than popular music, I listen to classical music more."

It seems that inspiration is often gained through travel. Listening, seeing, and feeling while traveling are all subject to inspiration."

In the past, I didn`t really watch the performance as much as I do now. These days, we are watching actors' movements, acting, singing, and even the externally-flavored atmosphere when we watch performances, which is often inspired or helped."

- If you have the ultimate goal or aspirations to achieve as a musician.

"I want to see the game with music. The music that I want to play is that I want to be recognized by the public as well as the music industry. Especially, I want to try many challenges with popular material based on classical music. Based on my major, classical soprano, if there is a role that my sound can cover, I would like to try it. Musicals were also offered last year. I got interested after receiving a call from the proposed company. I'm also interested in movie music and OST, so I want to try it."
