SK Corp. will take over stakes in overseas oil distribution companies and begin to tap into the local market.

SK Innovation said its oil business subsidiary SK Energy (CEO CEO Cho Kyung-mok) and SK Trading International (CEO CEO Seo Seok-won) signed a contract on Wednesday to acquire shares of BOC (Best Oil Company), Myanmar's second-largest oil distribution group.

BOC is a wholly owned subsidiary of PT Power, which is responsible for oil imports and distribution in southern Myanmar, and PSW, which builds and operates oil product import terminals. BOC has a 17% share of Myanmar's oil market. Through the deal, SK will secure a 35 percent stake, with SK Energy and SK Trading International holding 17.5 percent each. Its investment is about 150 billion won.

About 500 people attended the signing ceremony at the Yangon Lotte Hotel in Myanmar, including SK Energy President Cho Kyung-mok, SK Trading International President Suh Suk-won, BOC Chairman Aung Shuwe and BOC President Win Swe.
Seo Seok-won, president of SK Trading International, said of the investment, "This is a strategic investment to secure a stable export and trading market and enter overseas retail markets to create growth opportunities."

SK Energy and SK Trading International have been paying attention to the Southeast Asian oil market, which has recently been exploding, and seeking various investment opportunities. As SK Energy succeeded in investing in Myanmar after securing a 5.23 percent stake in Vietnam's PV Oil Corp. last year, the company's strategy to preemptively enter the highly-growth market and gain a competitive edge is paying off. It is the first time for a local refiner to invest in an overseas oil distribution company, which allows SK Corp. to expect return on investment from business growth along with its oil product supply margin.

Myanmar has been growing rapidly since its regime was handed over to a civilian government in 2011 and U.S. economic sanctions ended in 2016. It is located in a strategic hub that borders the Indian Ocean and connects large markets China and India, and has the potential to develop as an emerging production hub and consumer market by having abundant labor and abundant resources at low wages. Between 2013 and 2017, the country posted an average annual GDP growth rate of 7.2 percent.

On top of that, demand for oil products is forecast to grow by an average of 10 percent annually by 2025, with the effects of the import liberalization measures in 2012 leading to an explosion in the number of cars and growing demand for industrial diesel due to industrial growth, which is expected to generate stable profits in the oil market in the future.

"We will create a success story that maximizes performance of partner companies by utilizing SK's know-how in operating the world's best oil business." said President Cho Kyung-mok of SK Energy.
