Samsung Heavy Industries is the first company in the industry to win orders for 10 LNG-fueled crude carriers worth 751.3 billion won at a time.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on Wednesday that it has won a 751.3 billion won order to build 10 Aframax-class 113,00DWT LNG-fueled crude carriers from Preposition of Oceania. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered sequentially by January 2022.

The ships, equipped with S-Fugas, an LNG fuel supply system independently developed by Samsung Heavy Industries, are eco-friendly vessels that can reduce 99 percent of sulfur oxide, 85 percent of nitrogen oxide and 25 percent of carbon dioxide compared to conventional diesel oil use by using LNG as propulsion fuel.

The "S-Fugas" is a system that vaporizes minus 163 degrees of liquefied LNG and supplies it to ships' main engines or generators, one of the key technologies for LNG fuel propulsion ships.

LNG is considered the most realistic alternative to sulfur dioxide while meeting the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s regulation on sulfur oxide emissions (reducing sulfur oxide content from 3.5 percent to below 0.5 percent).

The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) based on advance data from Clarkson, DNV-GL and Lloyd, predicted that the LNG fuel propulsion market will account for 60.3 percent ($108.5 billion) of the world's newly placed ship market by 2025.

Under this market trend, Samsung Heavy has secured differentiated quality competitiveness in the LNG fuel propulsion system by applying various forms and materials of LNG fuel tanks and engines (ME-GI, X-DF) since 2012. Samsung Heavy Industries has recorded orders for a total of 20 LNG fuel propulsion vessels (excluding LNG carriers) including this contract.

Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries is focusing on strengthening the competitiveness of its products across LNG value chains by successfully developing an LNG fuel-powered VLCC in June and establishing large-scale demonstration facilities to secure core technologies for next-generation LNG last month.

"We will continue to lead the eco-friendly ship market by increasing our competitive edge in orders by reducing production cost through continuous development of technologies and localization," a Samsung Heavy official said.

Samsung Heavy Industries has won a total of 29 ships and $4.2 billion in orders so far, achieving 54 percent of its target of $7.8 billion. The order is also expanding to a variety of types of ships, including 11 LNG carriers, 14 crude carriers, two petrochemical product carriers, one special ship and one FPSO.
