LS(회장 구자열)가 지난 23일, 그룹의 기술 올림픽으로 불리는 연구개발 성과공유회 ‘LS T-Fair 2019’를 안양 LS타워에서 개최했다.
T-Fair는 LS 창립 이후 그룹 차원에서 기술 경쟁력을 강화하고 연구 문화를 확산시키기 위해 지난 2004년부터 실시하여 올해로 15회째를 맞았다.
행사에는 구자열 회장, 구자엽 LS전선 회장을 비롯한 회장단과 각 계열사 CEO, CTO(최고기술책임자) 등 연구원 400여 명이 참석했으며, 한해동안 이룬 R&D 성과를 공유하고 우수 과제 발표와 시상식 등을 가졌다.
올해는 예년과 달리 우수 과제에 대한 전시를 과감히 생략하고 미디어 퍼포먼스, 인문학·비즈니스 특강, 참석자 네트워킹 등을 새롭게 도입해, R&D 구성원들이 실질적이고 다양한 체험을 할 수 있는 시간을 마련했다는 점이 특징이다.
특강에는 과학탐험가 문경수 씨가 ‘관점을 달리하면 새로운 세상이 열린다’를, 한국IBM 송기홍 수석 부사장이 ‘산업분열(Industry Disruption)과 DT(Digital Transformation)’를 주제로 각각 강연을 펼쳐 임직원들의 큰 호응을 얻었다.
R&D 우수 과제로는, LS전선의 글로벌 시장 맞춤형 버스덕트(bus duct : 전선 등 도전체를 강철제 외함에 수납한 배선통) 및 LS엠트론의 국내 최초 100마력급 트랙터 파워시프트(자동차의 기어 등을 작은 조작력으로 조절할 있는 변속 장치의 방식) 개발 등 5개 회사의 과제가 제품·프로세스 혁신의 우수 사례로 선정됐다.
또한 LS산전의 전기 배터리와 신재생 에너지에 필수적인 저압 직류 차단기와 계전기(Relay : 전압, 전류, 전력, 주파수 등의 전기 신호를 열거나 닫는 스위치)와, 예스코의 IoT(사물인터넷)를 활용한 위험예측 조기경보시스템 등 3개 과제가 디지털 혁신의 성공모델을 제시해 D/T 부문 우수 과제로 꼽혔다.
구 회장은 격려사에서 “최근 기업들의 최대 현안인 한·일 무역 갈등의 격화 양상 속에서 결국 ‘R&D와 혁신’이 이 난국을 타개할 핵심 열쇠” 라며, “주력 사업 분야에서 고부가가치 제품과 서비스 개발로 후발주자와의 격차를 벌리고, 4차 산업혁명 흐름에 대응해 미래성장동력을 창출하려면 이러한 R&D 우수 사례들이 더 많이 나와야 한다”고 강조했다.
이어 포드자동차 창업자인 헨리 포드의 말을 인용, “비행기가 이륙할 때에는 바람의 힘을 뒤에서 받지 않고, 맞서기 때문에 뜬다는 것을 기억하라”며, “AI, 5G 등 기술 환경이 급변하고 주변 상황이 녹록지 않지만, LS만의 창의적이고 도전적인 에너지로 여러분이 그룹의 혁신 선봉장이 되어주길 바란다”고 말했다.
한편, 구자열 회장은 2015년부터 ‘R&D Speed-up’과 ‘디지털 전환(Digital Transformation)’을 그룹의 연구개발 및 미래 준비 전략으로 강조해 왔으며, 이에 LS그룹은 각 계열사 별로 전통적인 제조업 분야에 AI, 빅데이터, 디지털 디자인, 3D프린팅 등을 설계와 개발, 검증 단계 등에 적용해 운영 효율성을 높이는 한편, 디지털 변혁을 위한 R&D 과제를 선정해 추진하며 디지털 기업으로의 변신으로 꾀하고 있다.

LS, chairman Koo Ja-yeol, held the R&D performance-sharing meeting "LS T-Fair 2019," dubbed the group's technology Olympics, at the LS Tower in Anyang on Sunday.
T-Fair was launched in 2004 to enhance technological competitiveness and spread research culture at the group level since LS was founded, marking the 15th anniversary this year.
The event was attended by Chairman Koo Ja-yeol, LS Cable Chairman Koo Ja-yup and 400 other researchers, including CEOs of each affiliate and CTO, who shared their R&D achievements over the year, and held presentations of outstanding projects and awards ceremonies.
Unlike in previous years, this year's exhibition on outstanding tasks has been drastically omitted and new media performances, special lectures on humanities and business, and networking of attendees have prepared time for R&D members to have practical and diverse experiences.
In the special lecture, Moon Kyung-soo, a scientific explorer, gave lectures on "different perspectives lead to a new world," while Song Ki-hong, senior vice president of IBM Korea, gave lectures on "Industry Disruption" and "DT," which garnered great favor from executives and employees.
Among R&D's outstanding tasks, LS Cable's tasks such as bus ducts, which are tailored to global markets, and LSMtron's development of Korea's first 100-horsepower tractor power shift (a method of transmission that adjusts the gears of a car with small operation) were selected as examples of product and process innovation.
In addition, LS Industrial Systems' three tasks - low-pressure direct current breakers and relays (Relay: switches that open or close electrical signals such as voltage, current, power, and frequency), and YESCO's early warning system for predicting risks using IoT (Internet of Things) - were considered to be the best in the D/T sector as they
"R&D and innovation are the key keys to overcoming this impasse amid the intensifying trade conflict between Korea and Japan, the biggest pending issues for companies," Koo said in a pep talk. "In order to widen the gap with latecomers by developing high-value-added products and services in the main business sector, and to create future growth engines in response to the fourth industrial revolution, these R&D cases should emerge more."
"Remember that when a plane takes off, it floats because it doesn't get wind power behind it, but because it faces it," Ford Motor founder Henry Ford said. "Although the technological environment such as AI and 5G is rapidly changing and the surrounding situation is not melting down, with LS's creative and challenging energy, I hope you will be the leader of the group's innovation."
Chairman Koo Ja-yeol has emphasized R&D Speed-up and Digital Transformation as the group's R&D and future preparation strategies since 2015, and LS Group has been pushing each affiliate to increase operational efficiency by applying AI, big data, digital design and 3D printing to the traditional manufacturing sector, while promoting the transformation of the company into a digital transformation project.
