Korea Electric Power Corp. (CEO President Kim Jong-kap) held a ceremony at Heungdeok Energy Center on November 5 to mark the completion of the world's first superconducting transmission business.

Superconducting power transmission technology, and the next generation cable called the 'a dream grid', replace conventional copper conductor as a superconductor cable. Traditional cable transmission loss for 10 levels reduced and increased 5 times more transmission capacity is low voltage and high capacity transmission is available. In addition, extension big cities with a difficult track features suitable for track replacement is required by overloading.

More than 100 officials from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, including KEPCO President Kim Jong-kap and LS Cable CEO Myung No-hyun, attended the ceremony to celebrate their achievements and pledged to work together to make superconducting power technology an opportunity to create new energy industries.

The newly completed 23kV 50MVA next-generation transmission system was commercialized by applying the world's first superconducting power cable-based transmission technology to the 1km section between the Shingal-Hungdeok energy center. Driving test last July since opening ceremony, began commercial operation in November.

The superconducting our country through commercial business was published last October, iea in a white paper issued by the (International Energy Agency) listed as ‘The world's first superconducting sangyongguk’.Internationally recognized.

Analysts say that Korea, which has been a latecomer in the field of superconducting transmission, will be able to lead the global superconducting power industry in a short period of time through the "DAPAS" policy of fostering basic science and technology (DEPAS) in superconducting fields. Although South Korea started research and development belatedly compared to leading countries such as the U.S., Europe, and Japan, it has the best technical skills and know-how in all fields, from design to test, production, installation and operation, in a short period of less than 20 years.

It is expected that this project will increase utilization rate of facilities by sharing power supply capability between energy centers in urban areas and secure a leading position in global superconducting power equipment technology development by demonstrating South Korea's superiority in superconducting transmission technology that has continued since 2016.

In addition, this project has greater business significance as KEPCO fosters high-tech industries by leading win-win cooperation and shared growth among domestic companies. In particular, through the active support of KEPCO, superconducting materials classified as Japanese strategic materials were localized 100 percent in the small and medium-sized South Gyeongsang Province.

KEPCO will also push for the commercialization of the world's first 154kV ultra-high-pressure superconducting transmission and superconducting platform with 23kV-class three-phase coaxial superconducting cable.

"In line with the government's policy of announcing its push to globalize materials, components and equipment beyond self-reliance, we will strive to establish the superconducting sector as a new growth engine and help Korea gain an upper hand in competition in the global energy market." said President Kim Jong-kap in his speech.
