애플이 저전력·엣지 기반 인공지능(AI) 기술을 연구하는 스타트업 'Xnor.ai(엑스노어)'를 인수했다. 엑스노어는 시애틀에 위치한 기업으로 곳으로

마이크로소프트 공동 창업자인 폴 앨런이 세운 AI 연구기관 'AI2'의 스타트업 인큐베이터에서 분사했다. 애플의 엑스노어 인수는 2억달러(2500억원) 규모에 달한다는 것으로 알려졌다.

19일 M&A업계에 따르면 엑스노어는 최근 AI의 핵심 기술로 부상하고 있는 클라우드 컴퓨팅에서 엣지 컴퓨팅으로 전환하는 과정을 반영, 단말기에서 직접 데이터를 전송하는 기술 경쟁력이 뛰어난 기업이다.

엑스노어는 클라우드에 의존하지 않고 IT기기 자체에서 이미지 인식, 기계학습(머신 러닝) 등 인공지능을 구현하는 기술을 보유하고 있다. 해당 기술은 저전력을 바탕으로 운영된다.

엑스노어는 2019년 초소형 배터리만으로 여러 해 동안 사용 가능한 인공지능 칩을 개발하고 있다. 저전력 AI 칩의 경우 전원에 연결하거나 배터리를 교체하거나 재충전할 필요가 없는 쪽에 초점을 맞춘 것으로 전해진다. 저전력 AI 칩을 활용하게 되면 AI 소프트웨어의 하드웨어와 전력 요구량을 줄일 수 있고, 앱의 범위를 크게 확장이 가능하다.

엑스노어는 그동안 자동차와 유통 분야의 앱 등을 출시해 왔다. 에너지 효율성 극대화를 위해 태양광 발전으로 전원을 공급하는 독립형 AI 반도체 칩도 개발했다. 엑스노어는 최근 인공지능 처리를 클라우드로 연결된 데이터센터가 아닌 스마트폰이나 스마트 홈 단말기, 차량에 탑재된 단말기 등 단말기 내에서 바로 실행하는 기술을 개발 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

애플은 지금까지 여러 차례 인공지능 개발 기업 인수를 단행해 왔다. 어시스턴트 시리(Siri)는 미국 스탠퍼드 연구소(SRI)에서 개발된 기술로서 애플이 2010년 이를 인수했고, 2016년에는 머신 러닝 기술을 연구하는 투리(Turi)라는 벤처기업을 2억 달러에 인수했다. 지난해는 실리콘 밸리에서 자동 운전 기술을 개발해온 신흥 기업 드라이브 에이아이(Drive.ai)를 인수하는 등 신기술 확보를 위해 공격적인 투자에 나서고 있다.

IT업계는 애플이 엑스노어를 인수한 만큼 향후 아이폰, 아이패드 등 기기에 엑스노가 개발한 AI 칩을 탑재할 것으로 예상하고 있다.

M&A업계 한 관계자는 “애플은 오래전부터 첨단 기술 구입을 위해 과감한 투자행보를 보여왔다"며 "최근 클라우드 사업의 보안 중요성이 확대되고 있는 가운데 엑스노어의 인공지능 애플리케이션으로 생성된 데이터를 클라우드 외부에서 유지할 수 있게 된 만큼 정보보안을 향후 경쟁력으로 내세울 가능성이 높아 보인다"고 말했다.

[M&A]  Apple to Acquire AI Development Company’s Xenore

Apple has acquired ‘Xnor.ai’, which is a startup that studies low-power and edge-based AI (Artificial Intelligence) technologies. X-Nore is a Seattle-based company.


It spun off from a startup incubator of "AI2," an AI research institute set up by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. It is heard that Apple will acquire Apple’s X-noir worth about $200 million ($250 billion).

According to M&A industries on the 19th, X-Nore is a highly competitive company in technologies that transmit data directly from handsets by reflecting the process of transition from cloud computing to edge computing, which has recently emerged as a core technology for AI.


Instead of relying on the cloud, X-Nore has technologies that implement artificial intelligence such as image recognition and machine learning from IT devices themselves. The technology is operated on a low power basis.


X-Nore is developing artificial intelligence chips that can be used for many years with only ultra-small batteries in 2019. It is heard that low-power AI chips focus on those that do not need to be plugged in, replaced or recharged. By utilizing low-power AI chips, it can reduce hardware and power requirements of AI software and greatly expand the scope of applications.


X-Nore has been releasing apps in the automobile and distribution sectors. To maximize energy efficiency, it has also developed an independent AI semiconductor chip that supplies power to solar power. It is heard that X-Nore is currently developing a technology that executes artificial intelligence processing directly within the device, such as smartphones, smart home handsets and terminals on vehicles, rather than data centers connected to the cloud.

Apple has conducted several acquisitions of artificial intelligence development companies so far. Assistant Siri is a technology developed by the Stanford Institute in the U.S. that Apple acquired in 2010 and a venture company called Turi, which studies machine running technology, for $200 million in 2016. Last year, it has been aggressively investing in securing new technologies by acquiring AI (Drive.ai), an emerging company that has developed automatic driving technology in Silicon Valley.

The IT industry expects Apple to use the AI chip developed by Xno in devices such as iPhones and iPads in the future, as Apple acquired the X-no.

"Apple has long been making bold investments to purchase high-tech technologies," an M&A industry source said. "With the security importance of the cloud business expanding recently, it is highly likely that it will be able to maintain data generated by the artificial intelligence application of XNoer outside the cloud, it will be able to put up with information security as a competitive force in the future."
