미국의 모바일 게임업체인 스코플리가 최근 마블 스트라이크 포스로 공전의 히트를 기록한 월트디즈니(이하 디즈니) 산하 폭스넥스트 게임즈와 콜드아이언스튜디오를 인수했다고 30일 밝혔다.
스코플리는 '마블 스트라이크 포스', '루티툰즈 메이헴 월드', 'WWE 챔피언스', '워킹데드:로드 투 서바이벌' 등 다양한 프렌차이즈를 보유하고 있으며 LA, 바로셀로나, 더블린을 포함 7개 국가에서 스튜디오를 운영중이다.
스코플리 측은 "폭스넥스트 게임즈 인수를 통해 스코플리의 라이브 서비스 포트폴리오에 또 하나의 높은 수익성을 보이는 게임을 더하고, 사업개발 파이프라인 확대와 동시에 폭스넥스트 게임즈의 숙련된 팀을 영입하는 효과를 거둘 수 있게 됐다"고 밝혔다.
폭스넥스트 게임즈는 2018년 3월 마블 스트라이크 포스를 출시, 첫해에만 iOS와 안드로이드 버전에서 미화 1억5000만 달러에 달하는 수익을 거뒀다.
특히 제임스 카메론 감독 원작 영화 아바타를 기반으로한 다중전략게임인 아바타: 판도라 라이징(Avatar: Pandora Rising)도 개발 중이다.
스코플리의 폭스넥스트 게임즈 인수에는 폭스넥스트 게임즈가 IP를 보유하고 있는 게임은 포함되지 않고, 디즈니가 소유할 예정이다. 디즈니는 2019년 21세기 폭스사로부터 폭스넥스트 게임즈 스튜디오와 라이선스 게임들을 인수한 바 있다.
팀 오브라이언 스코플리 최고 매출 책임자는 “폭스넥스트 게임즈가 마블 스트라이크 포스로 선보인 놀라운 성과에 매우 깊은 인상을 받았으며 견실한 성장을 이어가고 있는 기존 사업에 더해, M&A를 통해 매우 적극적인 포트폴리오 확대해왔고 폭스넥스트의 유저 중심 게임 개발과 더불어 유저들에게 잊을 수 없는 게임 경험을 제공하고자 하는 스코플리의 목표와 일치한다”며 “스코플리와 폭스넥스트 게임즈의 세계 최고 수준의 팀들이 게임시장에서 더 큰 성과를 함께 이루기를 희망한다”고 말했다.
인수가 완료되면 폭스넥스트의 아론 오렙 사장은 스코플리의 신설되는 임원직을, 아미르 라히미 폭스넥스트 게임즈 수석 부사장은 스코플리 산하 폭스넥스트 게임즈의 사장으로 임명될 예정이다.
[M&A] Scopely acquires FoxNext Games from Walt Disney
U.S. mobile game company Scopley said Thursday that it has acquired FoxNext Games and Cold Iron Studio under Disney, which have recently become an unprecedented hit with Marvel Strike Force.
Scopley has a wide range of franchises, including "Marvel Strike Force," "Roottons Mayhem World," "WWE Champions" and "Walk Dead: Road to Survival," and operates studios in seven countries, including Los Angeles, Barcelona and Dublin.
"The acquisition of FoxNext Games has allowed us to add another game of high profitability to Scopley’s portfolio of live services, expand the business development pipeline, and at the same time hire a skilled team of FoxNext Games," Scopley said.
FoxNext Games released Marvel Strike Force in March 2018, bringing in US$150 million in revenue from iOS and Android versions in the first year alone.
Notably, the company is also developing "Avatar: Pandora Rising," a multi-strategy game based on James Cameron's original film Avatar.
Scopley's acquisition of Fox Next Games does not include a game in which FoxNex holds an IP, but will be owned by Disney. Disney acquired FoxNext Games studios and licensed games from 21st Century Fox in 2019.
"I'm very impressed with the amazing performance that FoxNex has shown as a Marvel Strike Force, and in addition to the existing business that continues to grow, we've expanded our portfolio very aggressively through M&A, and we're in line with our goal of providing users with unforgettable gaming experiences," said Tim O'Brien, chief sales officer at Scopley.
Once the acquisition is completed, FoxNex president Aaron Oreb will be named to the new executive post of Scopley, while Amir Rahimi, senior vice president of FoxNext Games, will be named president of FoxNext Games under Scopley.
