[M&A] LG Life&Healthy Care Co., Ltd. Absorbs its subsidiary 'OBM Lab'

LG Life & Healthy will absorb and combine "OBM Lab," which supplies raw materials for cosmetics. OBM Lab is a wholly owned subsidiary of LG Household & Health Care, a supplier that manufactures raw materials for herbal cosmetics, and a manufacturer that supplies raw materials such as herbal cosmetics brands "Hu" and "Surehan." LG Life & Healthy holds a 100 percent stake in OBM Lab.

LG Life & Healthy said the move is aimed at securing stable raw materials and strengthening security against prescription ingredients. The merger date between LG Life & Healthy and OBM Lab is April 21.
The stock market's reaction to LG Life & Healthy's merger of OBM Labs is positive. This is because it is likely to lead to increased sales by targeting Chinese markets with its premium brand cosmetics called "Hu."

LG Life & Healthy posted 7.685 trillion won in sales and 1.176 trillion won in operating profit last year. It rose 13.9 percent and 13.2 percent, respectively, on-year. Its net profit was also up 13.9 percent from last year to 788.2 billion won.

LG Life & Healthy's earnings growth came as luxury cosmetics such as Huwa, Breath and Oh Hui grew by a large margin despite internal and external difficulties such as the sluggish domestic economy, the U.S.-China trade dispute and the prolonged Hong Kong crisis. Sales of overseas businesses, in particular, increased 48 percent on-year due to brisk business in major overseas markets such as China and Japan.

By business sector, sales from the cosmetics business grew 21.5 percent on-year to 4.745 trillion won and operating profit rose 14.7 percent to 897.7 billion won over the cited period.
Cosmetics brand Hu achieved 2.583 trillion won in annual sales last year after surpassing 2 trillion won for the first time in Korea’s cosmetics industry in 2018. Breath and The First, the expensive lines of Breath and Oh Hui, are also growing.

"LG Life&Healthy continues to increase sales in China with its back on the back of its head," a stock market insider said. "While LG Life & Healthy is expanding its dominance in the Chinese market based on Korean-Chinese cosmetics, OBM Lab's absorption will lead to positive effects."
