글로벌 소셜미디어 기업 페이스북이 컴퓨터 비전 스타트업 '스케이프 테크놀로지'를 인수했다. 스케이프 테크놀로지는 컴퓨터 비전을 이용해 사용자의 위치를 파악하는 스타트업으로 영국 런던에 본사를 두고 있다.

컴퓨터 비전은 컴퓨터가 사람처럼 영상이나 이미지를 통해 주변 환경이나 사물 등을 시각적으로 이해하도록 하는 인공지능(AI) 과학의 한 분야다.

10일 인수합병(M&A)업계에 따르면 미국 IT 전문매체 테크크런치는 8일(현지시각) 스케이프테크놀로지스를 인수했다고 보도했다.

테크놀로지는 컴퓨터 비전에 기반을 둔 '시각적 위치 확인 서비스'를 개발중이다. 시각적 위치 확인 서비스는 카메라가 포착한 영상을 통해 위성항법장치(GPS)만으로 확보할 수 있는 것보다 더 정확한 위치 정보를 파악하는 게 가능하다. 클라우드를 기반으로 한 비주얼 포지셔닝 서비스를 통해 이미지를 3D 지도로 변환한다. 이를 통해 전체 도시의 정밀한 위치 정보를 제공한다.

사용자는 스케이프테크놀로지스가 제공하는 정보를 이용해 거리에서 특정 상점이 정확히 어디에 위치도 파악할 수 있다. 당초 증강현실(AR) 앱을 겨냥해 개발됐지만 이동(mobility)이나 물류, 로봇 공학의 응용 분야에도 유용하게 쓰일 수 있다.

페이스북이 스케이프 테크놀로지를 인수한 것은 가상현실(VR)이나 증강현실(AR)을 포함한 차세대 플랫폼을 고려하고 있다는 게 테크크런치의 분석이다. 마크 저커버그 페이스북 CEO가 올해 향후 10년을 이끌 IT 미래기술로 증강현실(AR)을 꼽은 점 등은 이같은 분석의 가능성을 높인다.

페이스북은 측은 테크크런치 인수와 관련해 "중소·스타트업을 수시로 인수하고 있고, 이를 밝히지는 않는다"고 밝혔다.
한편 테크크런치는 페이스북의 스케이프 테크놀로지 인수 금액은 정확히 알려져지 않았다면서도 4000만달러(약 477억원) 가량이 될 것이라고 분석했다.

Technology is developing a computer vision-based 'visual positioning service'. Visual positioning service is able to identify more accurate location information than can be obtained through GPS (Galaxy Navigation System) through video that is captured by a camera. Convert images to 3D maps with cloud-based visual positioning services. This provides precise location information for the entire city.



Users can use the information provided by Skape Technologies to identify exactly where a particular store is located on the street. Although it was originally developed to target AR apps, it can also be useful for applications in mobility, logistics and robotics.



TechCrunch analyzed that Facebook's acquisition of Scape Technology is considering a next-generation platform, including virtual reality or augmented reality. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s choice of augmented reality as an IT future technology that will lead the next 10 years increases the possibility of such analysis.



Regarding the acquisition of TechCrunch, Facebook said that it has frequently acquired small and medium start-ups and does not reveal them.
TechCrunch said Facebook's acquisition of Skype technology was not known, but said it would be worth $40 million.
