페이스북이 VR(가상현실) 게임업체 산자루게임즈를 인수했다. 지난해 말 VR 게임사 비트게임즈를 인수한 이후 3개월 만이다.

페이스북은 향후 VR 시장이 커질 수 있을 것으로 예상, 관련 분야에 과감한 투자를 진행하고 있다. VR 경쟁력 강화는 마크 저커버그 페이스북 최고경영자(CEO)의 주도로 이뤄지고 있는 것으로 알려졌다. 페이스북은 지난 2014년 VR기기 제작사 오큘러스를 20억달러(약 2조4000억원)에 인수한 이후 VR 콘텐츠 경쟁력 강화를 추진 중이다.

27일 증권가에 따르면 페이스북은 지난 25일(현지시각) 성명을 통해 산자루 게임즈 인수를 공식발표했다. 산자루게임즈는 페이스북의 VR 사업 부문인 오큐러스 스튜디오에 편입된다. 페이스북은 인수가격은 공개하지 않았다. 과거 기업 인수에 따른 인수대금과 세부 세용 등을 공개하지 않은 것과 비슷한 모습이다.

다만 페이스북은 이번 인수는 VR 시장 경쟁력 강화 차원에서 이뤄졌다고 밝혔다. 현재 VR콘텐츠는 게임 분야에 집중되고 있다. VR 콘텐츠 경쟁력을 끌어 올려 시장 선도 기업으로 올라서기 위한 행보인 셈이다.

페이스북 측은 "VR 시장을 가속화시키기 위해 여러 실험을 하고 있고, 관련 콘텐츠 제작에 좀 더 깊이 관여하려는 것"이라고 산자루게임 인수 배경을 설명했다. 산자루게임즈는 미국에서 2007년 설립된 VR 게임 스타트업이다. VR 기술을 활용한 게임을 만들고 있다.

페이스북은 지난해 말 VR 게임사인 비트게임즈를 인수하하는 등 VR 콘텐츠 경쟁력 강화에 적극 나서고 있다. 지난 9일에는 AR을 겨냥한 시각적 위치 확인 서비스를 개발하는 스타트업인 스케이프테크놀로지스도 인수했다.

페이스북의 VR 사업 강화는 마크 저커버그 CEO의 의지가 적극 반영된 것이란 게 업계의 평가다. 공식 석상에서 VR 기술의 중요성을 언급, 사회 전반에 파급력 있는 서비스를 제공하는 주요 수단이 될 것으로 예상해왔다는 게 이유다.

M&A업계 관계자는 "페이스북의 VR 게임사 인수는 단순히 VR 콘텐츠 시장 경쟁력 강화를 넘어 향후 VR 시장의 퍼스트무버로 가기 위한 움직임으로 봐야 한다"며 "서비스 초기인 만큼 게임에 집중돼 있지만 향후 원거리 방문 및 생활 전반에 막대한 영향력이 발휘 될 수 있는 만큼 VR경쟁력 강화를 위한 기업 인수는 지속적으로 이뤄질 것으로 보인다"고 말했다.

Facebook has acquired Sanzaru Games, a virtual reality game company. It is the first time in three months since the acquisition of VR game company Bit Games late last year.


Facebook is making bold investments in related fields, expecting that the VR market could grow in the future. Strengthening VR competitiveness is reportedly being led by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook has been seeking to strengthen its competitive edge in VR contents since it acquired Oculus, a VR device manufacturer, for $2 billion in 2014.



According to the stock market on the 27th, Facebook officially announced its acquisition of Sanzaru Games in a statement on the 25th (local time). Sanzaru Games will be incorporated into Ocurus Studios, Facebook's VR business. Facebook did not disclose the acquisition price. This is similar to the fact that the company did not disclose the acquisition amount and detailed tax use of the company in the past.



Facebook, however, said that the acquisition was made to strengthen the competitiveness of the VR market. Currently, VR content is concentrated in the gaming sector. In other words, it is a move to become a market leader by attracting competitive edge in VR contents.



Facebook "is conducting several experiments to accelerate the VR market, and is trying to be more deeply involved in the production of related content," explained the background of the acquisition of Sanzaru Games. Sanzaru Games is a VR game startup founded in 2007 in the United States. It is making a game using VR technology.


Facebook has been actively strengthening its competitiveness in VR contents, including acquiring Bit Games, a VR game company, at the end of last year. On the 9th, the company also acquired Skape Technologies, a startup that develops visual positioning services targeting AR.



Industry watchers say that Facebook's strengthening of its VR business reflects CEO Mark Zuckerberg's determination. This is why he mentioned the importance of VR technology in public and expected it to be a major means of providing influential services throughout society.



"Facebook's acquisition of VR game companies should be seen as a move to become the first mover in the VR market, not just to strengthen the competitiveness of VR contents," an M&A industry source said. "We are focusing on the game as it is in the early stage of service, but as it can exert enormous influence on long-distance visits and life in the future, the acquisition of VR games will continue."
