대림산업이 신소재 사업 경쟁력 확대에 나선다. 미래 신성장 동력 확보와 사업 다각화 등을 통해 글로벌 기업으로 자리매김하기 위한 일환에서다.

9일 대림산업에 따르면 이날 미국 크레이튼사의 카리플렉스 사업부를 인수한다. 카리플렉스 사업부는 이소프렌 고무 및 이소프렌 고무 라텍스 제품을 생산하는 곳이다.

대림산업은 카리플렉스의 브라질 생산 공장과 네덜란드 R&D센터를 포함한 원천기술, 미국·독일·벨기에·일본·싱가포르 등 국제 판매 조직 및 인력·영업권도 함께 확보했다. 총 인수금액은 5억3000만 달러(약 6200억원)다.

대림산업이 인수를 통해 확보한 ‘고기능 부타디엔 고무 생산’ 원천기술은 지난 2월 기획재정부에서 선정한 신성장·원천기술 중 하나로 활용성이 높다. 메탈로센 촉매 등 독자적으로 개발한 기술과 카리플렉스의 음이온 촉매 기반의 합성고무 생산 기술을 융합해 의료기기, 우주항공, 기능성 타이어 등 첨단 산업분야에 적용 가능한 고부가가치 석유화학 사업확장이 가능한 것도 눈여겨 볼 만하다.

대림산업은 의료용 신소재 산업을 주목하고 있다. 마침 카리플렉스가 생산하는 합성고무와 라텍스 등은 수술용 장갑과 주사용기 고무마개 등 의료용 소재로 사용된다. 해당 제품들은 글로벌 합성고무 수술용 장갑 시장에서 점유율 1위를 차지하고 있으며, 합성고무 수술용 장갑 시장은 매년 8% 수준의 높은 성장이 예상된다.

의료용 신소재 산업의 전망도 밝다. 천연고무로 만든 수술용 장갑은 의사와 환자 모두에게 알레르기를 유발할 수 있으나 합성고무로 만든 수술용 장갑은 이러한 위험성이 없다. 합성고무 소재의 안전성 때문에 미국 시장을 중심으로 빠르게 성장하고 있으며 유럽 및 아시아에서도 사용 비중이 점차 높아질 가느엉이 높다.

대림산업은 해외 기술 및 수입 의존도가 높은 의료용 소재 국산화를 통해서 관련 산업 생태계 구축에 나설 계획이다. 기술개발을 통한 원천기술을 확보하는 동시에  국내에 생산공장 투자를 검토 중이다.

김상우 대림산업 부회장은 "카리플렉스 인수는 석유화학 에너지 디벨로퍼 사업을 집중 육성하고 있는 이해욱 회장의 전략이 만들어 낸 가시적인 성과"라며 "첨단 신소재 산업 육성을 위한 대림의 첫 발걸음이 될 것"이라고 말했다.

[INVEST] Daelim Industrial's investment in new materials...U.S. acquisition of Crayton's Cariplex division

Daelim Industrial is planning to expand its competitiveness in new material business. The move is aimed at establishing itself as a global company by securing new growth engines for the future and diversifying businesses.



According to Daelim Industrial on the 9th, the company will take over the caraplex division of the U.S.-based company Creaton. The Cariplex division is the producer of isoprene rubber and isoprene rubber latex products.



Daelim Industrial has secured the company's Brazilian production plant, original technology including the Netherlands' R&D center, and international sales organizations, including the United States, Germany, Belgium, Japan and Singapore. The total acquisition amount is 530 million U.S. dollars.



The original technology for "high-functioning butadiene rubber production" secured by Daelim Industrial through the acquisition is highly available as one of the new growth and original technologies selected by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance in February. It is also noteworthy that the technology developed independently, such as the Metallosen catalyst, and the production of synthetic rubber based on anion catalyst by Cariplex can be combined to expand high value-added petrochemical businesses applicable to high-tech industries such as medical equipment, space aviation and functional tires.



Daelim Industrial is paying attention to the new medical materials industry. The synthetic rubber and latex produced by Cariplex are used as medical materials such as surgical gloves and rubber caps. The products in question hold the largest share in the global synthetic rubber surgical gloves market, and the synthetic rubber surgical gloves market is expected to grow at a high rate of 8% each year.



The outlook for the new medical materials industry is also bright. Surgical gloves made from natural rubber can cause allergies to both doctors and patients, but surgical gloves made from synthetic rubber do not pose this risk. Due to the safety of synthetic rubber materials, they are growing rapidly in the U.S. market and their use in Europe and Asia is increasing gradually.



Daelim Industrial plans to establish related industrial ecosystems through localization of medical materials that rely heavily on foreign technology and imports. While securing original technologies through technology development, it is also considering investing in production plants in South Korea



"The acquisition of Carriplex is a tangible result of Chairman Lee Hae-wook's strategy of intensively nurturing petrochemical and energy developer businesses," said Kim Sang-woo, vice chairman of Daelim Industry.
