'유블럭스(U-blox)'가 6일 사물인터넷 통신전문업체 '씽스트림(Thingstream)’을 인수했다고 7일 밝혔다.
유블럭스에 따르면 씽스트림의 인수금액은 약 1000만 스위스프랑(한화 126억원)이다. 직원 유지에 대한 추가 보상금도 지불한 것으로 알려졌다.
씽스트림은 산업 표준인 '메시지 큐잉 텔레메트리 트랜스포트(MQTT)' 프로토콜 기반의 IoT 커넥티비티 솔루션을 공급하는 IoT CaaS(Communication-as-a-Service) 전문 기업이다. 위치추적 및 무선 통신 기술 분야 전문 기업인 유블럭스는 씽스트림 인수를 통해 IoT 관련 서비스 경쟁력을 극대화 한다는 방침이다.
MQTT는 센서 네트워크 요건에 맞게 최적화한 MQTT-SN과 더불어 널리 사용되는 데이터 전송 프로토콜이다. 하나의 소스 디바이스(퍼블리셔)가 중간의 매개자를 통해 한개 이상의 다른 싱크 디바이스(서브스크라이버)로 메시지를 전송하는데 사용된다.
저전력·저대역폭이 요구되는 제한된 환경을 위해 설계됐고, 사용자는 M2M 통신 단에서 보안 신뢰성 강화를 위해 해당 애플리케이션의 특별한 요건에 맞게 QoS를 설정할 수 있다.
씽스트림의 MQTT 애니웨어 서비스는 2G/3G/LTE/LTE-M 네트워크에서 MQTT-SN 메시지를 전송하기 때문에 통신사들은 셀룰러 데이터 설계를 수정할 필요가 없는 점이 특징이다.
토마스 자일러 유블럭스 CEO는 “씽스트림 인수로 IoT 스피어(Sphere) 서비스 사업 추진을 가속화할 수 있게 됐다"며 "IoT 스피어는 센서 데이터를 클라우드 엔터프라이즈에 연결할 수 있도록 믿을 수 있고 스마트한 보안 솔루션을 제공할 것”이라고 강조했다. 이어 “해당 기술로써 연결 플랫폼 확보와 구축, 데이터 흐름 관리를 유지해야 하는 작업 대신 사업 확장에 주력할 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.

U-blox made an announcement on the 7th that it has acquired "Thingsstream," an Internet of Things communication company, on the 6th.
According to U-blox, the acquisition amount of Thingstream is about 10 million Swiss francs (KRW 12.6 billion). He also reportedly paid additional compensation for maintaining his staff.
Thinkstream is an industry standard, Message Queuing Telemetric Transport (MQTT). It is a company specializing in IoT Communication-as-a-Service that supplies protocol-based IoT connectivity solutions. U-blox, which specializes in location tracking and wireless communication technology, is planning to maximize competitive edge in IoT-related services by acquiring Thinkstream.
MQTT is a widely used data transmission protocol along with MQTT-SN optimized for sensor network requirements. One source device (publisher) is used to send messages via medium intermediaries to one or more other sink devices (subscribers).
It is designed for limited environments that require low power and low bandwidth, and users can set QoS to meet the special requirements of the application to strengthen security reliability at the M2M communication platform.

CEO Thomas Zylor of U-blox emphasized, "With the acquisition of Thinstream, we will be able to accelerate the promotion of IoT Spear (SDD) service business," and added, "IoT Spear will provide a reliable and smart security solution to connect sensor data to cloud enterprises." He then said, "With the technology in question, we will be able to focus on expanding our business instead of having to secure, build, and maintain data flow management."
