애플이 코로나19 사태에도 불구, 기술 경쟁력 강화를 위해 스타트업 인수합병(M&A)을 적극 추진하고 있다. 조만간 가상현실(VR) 기술 스타트업인 넥스트VR의 인수에 나설 것이란 외신보도도 나왔다.

7일 M&A업계에 따르면 미국 IT 전문지인 나인투파이브맥은 지난 4일(현지시간) 애플이 넥스트VR 인수를 앞두고 있다고 보도했다. 인수금액은 1억 달러에 달할 것으로 추산했다. 인수가 최종확정 된 것은 아니지만 사실상 발표만을 남겨두고 있다고 예상했다.

애플이 VR 관련 경쟁력 강화에 나서고 있는 만큼 넥스트VR은 매력적인 매물이라는 것이다.

넥스트VR은 플레이스테이션, 오큘러스, HTC, 마이크로소프트, 레노버 등의 VR 헤드셋 기기 사용자들에게 스포츠 및 엔터테인먼트 관련 VR 경험을 제공하는 업체다. 실감형 콘텐츠가 경쟁력이다. 실시간 이벤트를 VR 환경에서 진행하는 형태의 서비스도 강점이 있다.

나인투파이브맥은 넥스트VR은 VR 관련 전문성 뿐만 아니라 모두 합쳐 40개의 특허 기술도 갖고 있다고 보도했다. 넥스트VR이 보유한 특허 기술은 음악이나 스포츠 이벤트를 VR 헤드셋에 고품질 비디오 스트리밍으로 제공할 수 있도록 지원한다. 넥스트VR은 VR 기반 스트리밍 서비스를 위해 NBA, 폭스스포츠, 윔블던, 다른 라이브 음악 및 스포츠 이벤트 파트너들과 제휴도 맺었다.

넥스트VR은 2019년초 시리즈 C 투자라운드에 실패하면서 40% 가까운 직원들을 감원한 바 있다. 반면 애플은 증강현실(AR)과 차세대 AR 전용 헤드셋 기기 관련 사업과 AR 기기를 위한 플랫폼도 개발 해왔다.

애플은 넥스트VR 인수를 통해 애플은 실제 현실과 가상현실을 결합한 증강현실(AR) 서비스를 강화에 나설 가능성이 높다는 게 M&A업계의 분석이다.

M&A업계 한 관계자는 "애플은 그동안 차세대 기술 경쟁력 확보를 위해 실크랩스, 풀스트링, 투리, 엑스노 등 AI 스타트업과 유료 날씨 앱 다크스카이를 인수하는 등 차세대 기술경쟁력 강화에 나서고 있다"며 "코로나19로 글로벌 경기가 어려운 현재 상황은 자금력이 든든한 애플 입장에선 기술경쟁력이 높은 스타트업 인수에 적극 나설 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 수도 있을 것"이라고 말했다.

[M&A] Apple to take over NextVR, a startup company

Apple is actively pursuing M&As for startups to strengthen its technological competitiveness despite the Corona 19 crisis. Foreign media also reported that the company will soon seek to acquire NextVR, a virtual reality technology startup.

According to the M&A industry on the 7th, Nine to Five Mac, a U.S. IT magazine, reported on the 4th (local time) that Apple is about to acquire Next VR. It estimated the acquisition would reach $100 million. Although the acquisition is not finalized, it is expected that only the announcement will be made.

As Apple is trying to strengthen its VR-related competitiveness, Next VR is an attractive sale.

NextVR is a company that provides sports and entertainment-related VR experiences to users of VR headset devices such as PlayStation, Oculus, HTC, Microsoft and Lenovo. Realistic content is competitive. There is also a strong point in the form of services that conduct real-time events in VR environments.

Nine to Five Mac reported that NextVR has not only VR-related expertise but also 40 patented technologies in total. NextVR's patented technology supports providing high-quality video streaming of music or sports events to VR headsets. NextVR has also partnered with NBA, Fox Sports, Wimbledon and other live music and sports event partners for VR-based streaming services.

NextVR had lost nearly 40 percent of its employees in early 2019 when it failed to make an investment round for the series C. Apple, on the other hand, has also been developing projects related to augmented reality and next-generation AR-only headset devices and platforms for AR devices.

M&A industry analysts say that Apple is likely to strengthen its AR service, which combines reality and virtual reality, by acquiring NextVR.

"Apple has been trying to strengthen its next-generation technology competitiveness by acquiring AI startups such as Silk Labs, Fullstring, Turrie, and X-NO and the paid weather app Dark Sky in order to secure competitive edge in next-generation technologies," said an official from the M&A industry. "The current situation where the global economy is difficult due to Corona 19 may be a good opportunity for Apple to actively take over start-ups with high technological competitiveness."
