[M&A] Coupang to acquire the Singapore version of Netflix 'Hooq'

Coupang acquires 'Hooq', a Southeast Asian video streaming service company. According to the M&A industry on the 12th, Bloomberg reported on the 9th (local time) that Coupang recently signed a contract to acquire Hook's assets. Specific conditions and acquisition prices were not known.

Coupang has also made no comment on the background of the acquisition of Hooq. However it is seen as a move to strengthen its platform competitiveness by combining online shopping and contents.

Hooq is a video streaming company founded in 2015 by a joint venture between Sony Picture Television, Warner Bros. Entertainment and Singapore Telecom. It has been providing video content mainly in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries. It filed for bankruptcy protection in March after suffering from competition with large online video service providers (OTT) such as Netflix. The service has also been suspended in Southeast Asia since April.

Coupang says it cannot give any official confirmation of the acquisition or rumors of Hooq in Singapore. That's not to say that she denies it.
For now, Bloomberg News predicted Coupang's acquisition of Hooq as a stepping stone to enhance platform competitiveness, just as Amazon entered the streaming market with "Amazon Prime Video." Coupang, considered Korea's Amazon, is aggressively expanding its new businesses, including food delivery and digital economy, taking the U.S. giant Amazon as a mirror.

Bloomberg explained that Tencent, a large Chinese Internet company, recently agreed to acquire the Malaysian streaming platform IFLIX assets, and Gozek, a Southeast Asian ride-sharing service provider, also received funding from Golden Gate Ventures and others for its video service business.

In Korea, Naver has released paid memberships that combine various contents such as shopping, music and webtoons, and Kakao is also strengthening its platform competitiveness by reinforcing entertainment contents.

An M&A industry source said, "Recently, we are trying to reinforce contents with entertainment elements, focusing on online shopping malls," adding, "Although it will be possible to enter the OTT market simply, it is highly likely to be a strategic move to provide services combined with shopping."
