올림푸스가 기관지 내시경 및 호흡기 질환 진단·치료 분야에 전문성을 보유한 미국‘베란 메디컬 테크놀로지스’를 인수했다. 6일 올림푸스한국에 따르면 지난 4일 미국 법인을 통해 인수 계약을 체결했고, 계약 규모는 3억4000만달러(3677억원)에 달한다.

올림푸스의 베란 메디컬 테크놀로지스 인수는 호흡기과 제품 포트폴리오를 강화하기 위해 추진됐다. 올림푸스는 1950년 세계 최초로 위 카메라를 상용화한 이후 소화기 내시경 분야에서 세계 1위를 유지하고 있으며 호흡기과, 외과, 비뇨의학과, 산부인과, 이비인후과 등에서 쓰이는 다양한 진단 및 치료기기를 선보이고 있다.

베란 메디컬 테크놀로지스는 미국에 본사를 둔 의료기기 회사로, 의료진에게 치료 부위와 경로를 보여주는 ‘전자기유도 흉부 내비게이션 플랫폼’을 개발해 미국 전역 주요 암 센터에 공급하고 있다. 전자 내비게이션은 여러 갈래로 나눠진 가는 폐 말초부위까지 내시경과 처치구를 정밀하게 삽입할 수 있도록 돕는 역할을 한다.

올림푸스는 이번 인수를 바탕으로 전 세계 암 사망률 1위인 폐암의 조기진단 및 치료 공헌도 가능할 것으로 보고 있다. 기관지 내시경과 처치구로 폐 말초부분의 조직이나 세포를 채취해 병기를 확정 진단하는 기술에 대한 수요가 증가하고 있기 때문이다.

나초 아비아 올림푸스 최고운영책임자(COO) 겸 미국 법인 CEO는 “이번 인수를 통해 제품 포트폴리오를 강화하고, 나아가 호흡기 분야에서 올림푸스의 지위를 더욱 굳건히 할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”고 밝혔다.

올림푸스는 의료내시경, 복강경, 수술장비 등의 진단·치료 솔루션을 제공하는 의료사업과 현미경, 산업내시경 등 이미징·계측·측정 솔루션을 제공하는 사이언스솔루션사업을 중심으로 하고 있다.

Olympus has acquired Veran Medical Technologies, the U.S., which has expertise in bronchoscopy and respiratory disease diagnosis and treatment. According to Olympus Korea on the 6th, the acquisition contract was signed through a U.S. corporation on the 4th, and the contract amount amounted to $340 million (367.7 billion won).



Olympus' acquisition of Veran Medical Technologies was designed to strengthen its respiratory and product portfolio. Since commercializing the world's first stomach camera in 1950, Olympus has maintained the world's No. 1 position in digestive endoscopy, and has introduced a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic devices used in respiratory department, surgery, urology, and ENT.



Veran Medical Technologies is a U.S.-based medical device company that has developed an "electromagnetic-guided chest navigation platform" that shows medical staff where and how to treat and supplies it to major cancer centers across the U.S. Electronic navigation helps to insert endoscopes and treatment tools precisely to the end of the lung, which is divided into several branches.



Olympus expects the acquisition to contribute to early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, the world's No. 1 cancer death rate. This is because there is a growing demand for technology to collect tissues or cells from the end of the lung with bronchial endoscopy and treatment tools to confirm the diagnosis of the disease.



"We expect the acquisition to strengthen our product portfolio and further strengthen Olympus' position in the respiratory sector," said Nacho Abia, chief operating officer of Olympus (COO) and CEO of the U.S. corporation.



Olympus focuses on medical projects that provide diagnostic and treatment solutions for medical endoscopes, laparoscopic and surgical equipment, and science solutions that provide imaging, measurement, and measurement solutions such as microscopes and industrial endoscopes.
