최재원 수석부회장 “전기차 산업 협력을 통해 한미경제협력 강화 계기될 것” 강조
SK이노베이션 (대표이사 사장 김준)은 현지시간 19일, 미국 조지아주 잭슨카운티 커머스시(Commerce, Jackson County, GA-US)에서 전기차 배터리 생산공장 기공식을 개최했다고 20일 밝혔다. 이 공장은 SK이노베이션이 미국에 직접 투자하는 첫 공장으로, 완공 시 글로벌 전기차 시장 최대 격전지 중 하나인 미국 시장에서 중요한 교두보 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다.
이날 기공식에는 윌버 로스(Wilbur Ross) 美 상무부 장관, 브라이언 켐프(Brian Kemp) 조지아주 주지사 등 미국 연방정부 및 주정부 관계자 등 한국 정부인사와 최재원 SK그룹 수석부회장, 김준 SK이노베이션 총괄사장 등 SK 경영진, 고객사와 협력사 관계자 등 200여명이 참석했다.
SK그룹 최재원 수석부회장은 “SK의 배터리 기술력과 사업 역량을 믿어준 글로벌 자동차 업체들과, 조지아주의 지지와 노력 덕분에 또 하나의 시작이 가능했다”면서, “훗날 이번 기공식은 전기차 산업의 협력을 통한 한미경제협력을 강화하는 계기가 될 것이며 미국과 전세계 자동차 발전에 한 획을 그은 역사가 돼 있을 것이라고 확신한다”고 말했다.
윌버 로스(Wilbur Ross) 美 상무부 장관은 “에너지, 화학, 통신 등의 분야에서 글로벌 리더 기업인 SK가 새로운 산업역학(New Industry Dynamic)을 받아들여 전기차 배터리와 같은 혁신적인 제품을 만드는 프로세스가 미국 경제에 새로운 활력을 불어넣고 있다”면서 “SK의 전기차 배터리 투자는 급성장하는 전기차 시대에 미국이 진정한 경쟁력을 갖는데 기여할 것”이라고 밝혔다. 또 “한국과 미국은 70년 가까이 서로에게 가장 충실한 동맹이다”면서 “대통령을 대신해 SK와 지방정부 관계자에게 진심으로 감사를 전한다”고 말했다.
브라이언 켐프(Brian Kemp) 조지아주 주지사는 “조지아 역사상 최대 규모의 투자가 시작되는 오늘은 열심히 사는 조지아 주민들에게 정말 신나고 의미 있는 날”이라며 “특히 투자와 더불어 조지아의 미래인 젊은이와 학생들을 위한 교육발전에 기부금을 전달하며 ‘같이’ ‘행복’을 실천해준 SK이노베이션에게 감사인사를 전한다”고 말했다.
SK이노베이션이 미국 내 생산거점으로 선택한 커머스시는 미국 조지아주 주도인 애틀란타(Atlanta)에서 북동쪽으로 약 110Km 떨어진 곳에 위치하고 있다.
이번 공장은 SK이노베이션의 ‘先 수주, 後 증설’ 전략에 따른 것으로, 글로벌 완성차 업체의 미국향 전기차에 장착될 배터리 장기 공급 계약에 따라 커머스시에 112만㎡(약 34만 평)의 부지를 확보하고 올해 2월부터 부지 정지 등 기초공사에 들어갔다.
SK이노베이션은 현지 법인인 SK Battery America를 통해 건설 투자비, 운전자본 등 총 1조 1396억원(10억 달러)을 연도별 분할 출자 형태로 투자할 계획이다. 이 공장은 2021년 하반기 완공해 설비 안정화 및 시운전, 제품 인증 등의 과정을 거쳐, 2022년 초부터 양산을 시작할 예정이다. 공장이 완공되면 SK이노베이션은 서산공장 생산량(연간 4.7GWh)의 두 배가 넘는 미국 내 생산 거점을 확보하게 된다. 또 2025년까지 누적 약 1조 9천억원(16억7천만달러)을 투자해 공장을 확대할 계획이다.
또 SK이노베이션은 향후 수주 증가가 예상되는 만큼 이에 대비해 이번 투자를 포함한 중장기적인 투자 확대를 검토 중이다. 이를 통해 2022년까지 60GWh/연 규모의 생산능력을 확보해 글로벌 수준의 전기차 배터리 업체로 성장한다는 목표다.
미국 남동부에 위치한 조지아주는 미국 내 제조업 메카로 급부상 중인 주 중 하나다. 록히드마틴 등 미국 굴지의 기업을 비롯해 인도 타타그룹 등 세계적 기업들이 있다. 특히 폭스바겐, BMW, 다임러, 볼보, 현대∙기아차 등 글로벌 자동차 업체들이 미국 남동부에 위치해, 이들 생산거점과의 연계성을 감안한 성장성 측면에서도 최적지로 평가 받고 있다.
SK이노베이션 김준 사장은 “이번 기공식은 미국, 유럽, 중국 등 전세계 주요 자동차 시장에 생산거점을 마련하게 됨으로써 SK이노베이션 배터리 사업에 대한 글로벌 완성차 업체들의 신뢰를 더욱 확실히 하게 됐다”면서, “이는 SK이노베이션 배터리사업의 딥체인지 2.0을 완성할 기반을 갖췄다는 것을 의미하는 만큼, 반드시 성공시켜 기업 가치를 더욱 높여나가겠다”고 강조했다.
[Focus] SK Innovation to Set Forward Base for Electric Vehicle Battery Market in U.S
SK Innovation (CEO CEO Kim Jun) made an announcement on the 20th that it held groundbreaking ceremony for electric vehicle battery production plant at Jackson County, Georgia on the 19th of local time and GA-US in Georgia. The plant is SK Innovation's first direct investment in the U.S. and is expected to serve as an important bridgehead in the U.S. market, one of the biggest battlegrounds in the global electric vehicle market, upon completion.
About 200 South Korean government officials, including U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, as well as SK executives, customers and business partners, including SK Group Senior Vice Chairman Choi Jae-won and SK Innovation General Manager Kim Jun.
"We have been able to make another start thanks to the support and efforts of Georgia and global carmakers who believed in SK's battery technology and business capabilities," said Choi Jae-won, senior vice president of SK Group. "I am confident that the groundbreaking ceremony will serve as an opportunity to strengthen Korea-U.S. economic cooperation through cooperation in the electric vehicle industry and make history for automobile development in the U.S. and around the world."
"The process of SK, a global leader in energy, chemicals and telecommunications, accepting new industrial dynamics and making innovative products such as electric vehicle batteries is giving new life to the U.S. economy," U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said. "SK's investment in electric vehicle batteries will contribute to the U.S. being truly competitive in the rapidly growing era of electric vehicles." It also said that South Korea and the U.S. are the most faithful allies to each other for nearly 70 years, and that they sincerely thank SK and local government officials on behalf of the president.
"This is a really exciting and meaningful day for hard-working Georgia residents, especially to thank SK Innovation for delivering donations to educational development for young people and students who are Georgia's future, as well as investments, and for practicing 'happiness'," said Brian Kemp, governor of Georgia.
The commerce city, chosen by SK Innovation as a production hub in the U.S., is located about 110 kilometers northeast of Atlanta, Georgia.
The plant is based on SK Innovation's strategy to win orders for new cars and expand its facilities, and it has secured 1.12 million square meters of land in the city of Commerce (about 340,000 pyeong) under a long-term battery supply contract that will be used for U.S.-oriented electric vehicles by a global automotive company and started work on the site suspension in February of this year.
SK Innovation plans to invest a total of 1.139 trillion won (1 billion U.S. dollars) in construction investment and operating capital through its local subsidiary SK Battery America. The plant is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2021 and begin mass production in early 2022 after undergoing procedures such as facility stabilization and commissioning and product certification. Once the plant is completed, SK Innovation will secure a production base in the U.S., more than double the output of its Seosan plant, or 4.7 GWh per year. It also plans to invest an accumulated 1.9 trillion won, or $1.67 billion, to expand the plant by 2025.
In addition, SK Innovation is considering expanding mid- and long-term investments, including the investment, in preparation for the expected increase in orders in the future. By doing so, its goal is to secure production capacity of 60GWh/year by 2022 and grow into a global-class battery manufacturer for electric vehicles.
Georgia, located in the southeastern U.S., is one of the fastest-rising states in the U.S. as a manufacturing mecca. There are leading U.S. companies such as Lockheed Martin, as well as global companies such as India's Tata Group. In particular, global carmakers such as Volkswagen, BMW, Daimler, Volvo, Hyundai and Kia are located in the southeastern part of the U.S. and are also considered to be optimal in terms of growth, considering their links to these production bases.
"The groundbreaking ceremony will further ensure global carmakers' confidence in SK Innovation's battery business by establishing production bases in major automobile markets such as the U.S., Europe and China," said SK Innovation CEO Kim Joon. "Since this means that SK Innovation's battery business has a foundation to complete Deep Change 2.0, we will definitely succeed and further enhance corporate value."
