효성중공업이 세계 최대규모인 미국 전력시장을 공략에 나선다. 미국 현지 내 위치한 공장을 인수, 현지 생산기지도 확보했다.
효성중공업은 16일 미국 테네시주에 위치한 미쓰비시의 초고압변압기 공장(MEPPI, Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc.)을 4,650만 달러(약 500억 원)에 인수하기로 했다고 밝혔다.
테네시 공장은 내년 상반기부터 산업 전반에 걸쳐 사용되는 내철형 초고압변압기를 본격 생산하게 된다. 내철형 초고압변압기는 북미를 포함한 글로벌 변압기시장 수요의 95%를 차지하는 제품이다.
효성중공업에 따르면 투자는 미국의 전력소비량이 지속적으로 늘어나고 신재생에너지 산업이 커지고 있는데다 전력 인프라의 노후화로 전력기기 교체 수요가 증가 하고 있는데 따른 것이다.
미국이 국내 주요 초고압변압기 업체들에 40~60%의 반덤핑 관세를 부과하는 등 보호무역주의를 강화함에 따라 현지 생산기지를 갖춰 시장경쟁력을 확보하기 위해 결정됐다.
미국 초고압변압기 시장은 약 2조원 규모로 효성중공업은 2001년 미국시장에 진출한 이후 미국의 주요 전력회사들과 장기적인 파트너관계를 유지해왔다. 이번 테네시 공장 인수로 현지 생산기지를 확보함에 따라 고객들에게 한층 안정적으로 제품 공급을 할 수 있게 됐다.
미국 테네시 공장 가동이 본격화되면 국내 주력 사업장인 창원공장은 글로벌 기술개발센터로서 역할을 강화하는 있고, 유럽 등 프리미엄 시장과 중동·아시아 시장 제품 생산에 주력할 계획이다.

The end-to-end ultra-high pressure transformer is a product that accounts for 95 percent of global demand for transformer markets including North America.
According to Hyosung Heavy Industries, the investment comes as the U.S. continues to increase electricity consumption, the renewable energy industry is growing, and demand for replacement of power equipment is increasing due to the aging power infrastructure.
The decision was made to secure market competitiveness by setting up local production bases as the U.S. has stepped up protectionism by imposing anti-dumping tariffs of 40-60 percent on major South Korean ultra-high pressure transformer makers.
The U.S. ultra-high pressure transformer market is worth about 2 trillion won, and Hyosung Heavy Industries has maintained a long-term partnership with major U.S. power companies since it entered the U.S. market in 2001. With the acquisition of the Tennessee plant, the company will be able to supply its products more reliably to customers as it has secured a production base there.
When operation of its plant in Tennessee in the U.S. begins in earnest, its main business in Changwon is strengthening its role as a global technology development center, and it is planning to focus on producing products in premium markets such as Europe and other markets in the Middle East and Asia.
